Rybak Solves Crime Problem!

While RT Rybak has seemed utterly unable to deal with crime in his plagued city, he might have some help:

Teresa Skarman was nearby, walking home around 9 p.m. when the footsteps behind her got louder, closer.

Within seconds, a wild-eyed gangly looking man snatched her weathered red leather purse.

"Stop him! Stop him!" screamed the diminutive 55-year-old co-op grocery store bagger.

(Cue the action-movie theme music here.)

Using his super hearing powers, the mild-mannered Evans -- wearing orange tights, black boots and a cape -- instinctively dashed after the mugger along the 2000 block of Garfield Avenue S. in Minneapolis.

A delivery driver for eco-friendly Galactic Pizza who dresses like a superhero while working, Evans chased the robber for blocks, yelled out to two passersby who helped to trap the crook in an alley, then let him go in exchange for the purse.

No "BAM!" or "POW!" was necessary.

Superheroes.

And we thought Rybak didn't have a plan.

Mpls crooks tremble and quake with fear tonight. Especially about the "let him go in exchange for the purse" part.
I'd say "BAM" and "POW" were VERY necessary.

Costume notwhithstanding (actually, I think that's pretty cool) - that kind of spirit amongst average citizens is going to the be the backbone of any reclamation of the city from the street rats. That kind intolerance for criminal activity is the foundation for building a healthy community. The cops will be sure and tell you to submit to the bad guys and don't try to fight or resist them (sure - their jobs depend on having a population that needs to call police) - but if bad guys know their act won't work in a given area, they won't try it there.
It's kind of like the road rage/uncontrolable anger hooey you're hearing about now - you ever see someone acting tough and loud while he thinks he can win a fight with anyone within earshot - and then get pretty quiet or leave the scene when a real knuckle-dragger shows up and gives him the eyeball? Same thing here. People know when they're wrong, and they can sense when they should and shouldn't try to be punks.
Bravo to these citizens.

Paul, well said. It was a great thing that the caped crusader and his helpers did. Too often people stand and watch these things happen while doing nothing to help -- as was the case years ago when my 76 year old grandma was purse-snatched in St. Louis in plain view in broad daylight.
I only wish they had sat on the idiot until the cops arrived.
Then the cops could let him go. ;-)
