Sue Jeffers has switched to the GOP to mount a primary challenge against Governor Pawlenty.
Good.
First Ringer at KvM makes a point very similar to the one I made on the NARN show a while ago:
in the backdrop of two contentious DFL primaries for Governor and U.S. Senate, Jeffers’ small and severely underfunded bid will do little more than simultaneously give Pawlenty another opportunity to make amends with his base while perfectly positioning himself for November. The coming arguments from Mike Hatch, Peter Hutchinson, Ken Pentel and Minnesota’s mainstream media that Pawlenty is a right-wing extremist seem increasingly laughable—especially to the Gopher State’s numerous if persnickety independent voters—when the Governor is being savaged for not being sufficiently conservative.Look for Jeffers to push Pawlenty to the right in the primary, then drop out. Pawlenty, his ailing mojo with the base reinvigorated by the push rightward, will beat whomever the DFL fields this fall. It'll be a better margin than in '02.Pushing Pawlenty to the right in September makes more sense that threatening his right in November. Whether Jeffers came to this conclusion by happenstance or deliberation matters little. The result is what matters and that’s an even better environment for a Pawlenty victory.
And the Independence "party" will finally lose major party status. Adios.

Could Jeffers run in the Republican Primary *and* as a Libertarian in Nov.? I am just not clear on how much is up to the party and how much is up to state law. If I were the libertarians I would keep a spot open for her all the way to November because it's the best shot they'll have to get the golden percentage they need to stay in the game. Hell, they'd even have to have a libertarian on the political panel on Almanac every week.
Not sure how this hurts only Hutchinson though. Hutchinson is helped by two dynamics: the mod republicans (who are more cheesed off by gay marraige and abortion than by spending) and con dems (who are freaked out by the moonbats). Add to that the unions and assorted other dems who have had the misfortune to have to deal with Mike Hatch on one of his rampages and you might have the perfect storm for Hutchinson. With Jeffers in there, the fiscalistas will have someone other than Pawlenty to vote for and some might go for Hutchinson's concord coalition type schpeel.
Posted by: Margaret at June 7, 2006 03:20 PMFor Margaret and the rest of the world...in Minnesota, there is a filing window in July for all state-level offices. That period opens 7/4/06 through 5pm 7/18/06. (Information available on the Mn SOS website). At the time of filing, you MUST register your party designation.
So at 5pm 7/18/06, Sue Jeffers will have to designated GOP or LIB. Once that period closes, no changes can be made. So either she's running in the Primary and losing to Pawlenty or running in the General and losing to Pawlenty. But she can not, by law, run in the Republican primary in September and change to Libertarian after losing the primary. Its against the law.
Posted by: Dave at June 7, 2006 04:42 PMThe political novice (Jeffers) didn't even have a running mate selected by the GOP convention - which could have been one of the reasons she was considered "unqualified" by the nominations committee.
Does she even realize that she HAS to choose a Lieutenant Governor running-mate? If she does understand that, it will be interesting to see who she picks (or who accepts, rather), when that choice is announced, and whether that person is actually a Republican or one of her Losertarian cronies.
If she can convince a well-known and popular Republican to join her ticket (no names come to mind at present), she could have a fighting, but still-uphill, chance to narrow it by Primary Day. Who knows? I guess that's why they call this a campaign.
Posted by: Edward at June 7, 2006 10:18 PMI think it's good to have another contender, but I've met Sue Jeffers -- she spoke at a CCRN meeting -- and was less than impressed. She wasn't familiar with the subject matter, although she did try to pander to the group; when it came to matters of principle, she seemed far more interested in expediency than anything else.
I think she runs a fine bar and restaurant, and is a nice lady, but, realistically, she's only an alternative in theory to Pawlenty.
Posted by: Joel Rosenberg at June 8, 2006 11:55 AMJoel, how recently was that? I ask because I met her during the smoking ban stuff and then we had her on the show awhile back and she seems to have gotten a lot better at answering critics, political debate, issues, etc. I've met a lot of nice candidates that didn't ever seem to learn anything while on the campaign trail (i.e. they had 0 aptitude for politics). I wouldn't put Sue in that category. If she's teachable, she has potential. Disclaimer: I am not supporting her vs. Pawlenty or any candidate for Gov at the moment.
