Batgirl, one of the essential baseball blogs, quotes from my close personal friend, Sid Hartman:
..."When [baseball financial consultant] Bob Starkey called me with the good news Sunday morning, I felt like I did when we got our stadium here [in Milwaukee]," Selig said. "That's how much it meant, because that's the last thing in the world anybody ever wanted to do, to think of no Twins in Minnesota."I hate it when that happens. Is that the last thing you wanted before or after contracting the team? Just checking.
Bud, really, shut up. No one likes you. The last thing we need is any reminders of your stadium strong-arm tactics. Go away, leave us alone, and let us enjoy our new stadium, because as much as BG wants and loves this new stadium, reminding us that we succumbed to your blackmail makes even BG throw up in her mouth a little bit.
No, the whole "consortium of cartel business and big government combine to jam pork-barrel spending down our throats" thing.

The Twins then celebrated by blowing game 3 in Milwaukee. Go Twins!
Posted by: Kermit at May 23, 2006 08:32 AMAs Reusse wrote the other day, we'll see how excited Twins fans are about the new stadium when Torri Hunter is shipped down the river to save Uncle Carl a few bucks.
Posted by: Jeff at May 23, 2006 08:37 AMOr, the more well-known Torii Hunter...

Torii will be shipped down the river because there is a club option on him in 2007 for a whopping $12 million! I love Torii and all but he ain't worth 12 mil.

Fulcrum
Posted by: Fulcrum at May 23, 2006 09:32 AMWe can 'thank' Tim Pawlenty and Steve Sviggum for this bit of limited government. Pawlenty has lost my vote because of his position on the stadiums issue, My Republican state rep, who voted for both stadiums, probably won't get my vote either. Hugh Hewitt can rest assured that I will get out and vote for Mark Kennedy and some other Republicans, but I hope Pawlenty loses.
Posted by: Freddie Beamer at May 23, 2006 10:11 AMFreddie, Freddie, that was Dean Johnson patting Jerry Bell on the back Sunday morning. High fives all around. You know Dean? Senate Majority leader? DFLer? Defender of the poor and downtrodden? Representing the little fellers, not the Rockerfellers (oops, that was Wellstone!).
Posted by: Kermit at May 23, 2006 10:18 AMYou want someone to blame, start with the Hennepin County Commission.
I hesitate to enter into this debate again, but it should be noted that the state legislature supported the principle that the proper governing entity for Hennepin County, in terms of what taxes will be levied in Hennepin County, and what those tax revenues will be used for, is the duly elected legislative body of Hennepin County.
There are those of us who oppose using tax revenues to support private enterprises, who also think it is a greater evil to undermine representative government via referendums, and who think it is wholly unacceptable for the state legislature to dictate to elected county governments regarding how they should levy taxes, just as it would be unacceptable for the U.S. Congress to require state governments to hold referendums prior to levying taxes. Of course, the latter action would explicitly violate the U.S. Constitution, whereas the former does not violate the Minnesota Constitution. This doesn't mean, however, that the latter action is a wise method of governance.
Those of us who believe it is nearly always best to support the principle of federalism, within states as well as the nation, and who are strident opponents of government by referendum, are in a position where we are forced swallow hard, no matter how strongly the gag reflex ensues, and accept this example of crony capitalism, lest we lend support to models which we believe to be far greater abominations.
Posted by: Will Allen at May 23, 2006 12:44 PMWill, the difference here is that when voters elected the HenCo Board, they were elected with the voters' right to a referendum on county additions to the sales tax. They never gave HenCo the right to unilaterally impose the tax. Thus your argument fails.
Posted by: kb at May 23, 2006 02:25 PMWell, kb, the requirement for a referendum was imposed by the state legislature. That requirement has been removed by the state legislature in this instance. As I think government by referendum to have minimal legitimacy (the Federalist Papers explains my position succinctly), I support the state legislature's removal of that requirement, if only in this instance (I would support completely removing the requirement). Thus your argument regarding my argument fails.
Posted by: Will Allen at May 23, 2006 04:07 PMHey, there's something we can all agree with. Dub Giles (as Angryclown prefers to call him) sucks. Geez, haven't had a decent commish since Pete Rose killed Bart Giamatti. Fay Vincent wasn't awful, but those glasses? And "Fay?"
Of course the dream commissioner woulda been the former minority owner of the Texas Rangers. Then only baseball would be screwed up instead of the whole country.
Posted by: angryclown at May 24, 2006 05:54 AMSTOP THE PRESSES!!!! AC and I agree on something. Bud Selig IS a disaster as a commish. The funny thing is, I have got the Little Logician saying the same thing. The first year we ever allowed him to stay up late was to watch the infamous All-Star game that Selig called as a tie. That kid was sputtering with all the righteous indignation that a wronged 8 year old can muster. When we went to the All Star game in Chicago a couple of years back he wated to SEEK OUT the Commish in order to tell him off about that game!
