Any politician yelping about high gas prices should be badgered into informing everyone as to precisely where they propose to build new refineries. Not for the first time, the regulatory regime primarily benefits the industry being regulated, by reducing competitive pressures.
I live on the Big Island. Hawaii is the only state in the union with a gas cap law. When I filled up the tank last week I payed $3.29/gallon for regular unleaded.
Government intervention in the marketplace is no answer to the problem of high gasoline prices.
