How ambiguous a statement does this seem?
“members of the Supreme Court, I know all of them. I have had a number of visits with them about our law. All of them, every one of them, including the lady who just stepped down, Kathleen Blatz, was my seatmate for four years. She was the chief justice. You know what her response was? ‘Dean, we all stand for election too, every six years.’ She said ‘We’re not going to touch it.’ That’s what she said to me.”It's Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson of Willmar, caught on tape and related in this piece in KvM:
Pat Lopez of the Star Tribune goes into damage-control mode for DFL Majority Leader Dean Johnson who has spent much of the last 24 hours backtracking on statements made — on tape — that he had visited with multiple members of the Minnesota Supreme Court about their intentions regarding current statutes prohibiting same-sex marriage...With all due respect to the Majority Leader, his remarks were at best “poorly worded.” At worst, the Reverend Johnson is guilty of lying and intervening as a senior member of the state’s legislative branch with the Court charged with determining the constitutionality of the laws it is Johnson’s job to pass. In either case, Johnson’s remarks raise the stakes not only for federal and state-wide DFL candidates who are loathe to see same-sex marriage decided by the voters, but Johnson’s fate may itself be on the ballot this fall for the first time in many election cycles.Fishsticks, who has covered this in the PiPress, adds:
I do not believe that Johnson is telling the truth about talking with Court members, and therefore, I don’t think it necessary or advisable to falsely defame members of the state Supreme Court with false accusations. If Johnson did talk with judges and they did say what he claims they said, then it is up to Johnson to make that statement.Posted by Mitch at March 16, 2006 07:55 AM | TrackBack
This is shocking!
The next thing you know, Johnson will be taking duck hunting trips with Blatz.
I'm switching parties.
Posted by: Doug at March 16, 2006 08:10 AMStand by for a Strongly Worded Editorial from the Red Star. Any day now. I'm sure it's coming.
Posted by: Kermit at March 16, 2006 08:12 AMany evidence that any judicial business was discussed on those duck hunting trips?
Y'know - the sort of stuff that was EXACTLY what Johnson was doing in the tape?
No?
Let me know when you have that, mkay?
Posted by: mitch at March 16, 2006 09:04 AMNope Mitch. No evidence what-so-ever.
And there's no direct evidence that Pluto is made of rocks but simple observation and commonsense would certainly suggest that it is.
Posted by: Doug at March 16, 2006 09:27 AMThere's no direct evidence that Doug is a raving moonbat Moveon.Org whacko suffering from BDS and HDS but simple observation and commonsense would certainly suggest that he is.
Posted by: Kermit at March 16, 2006 10:15 AMI think Dean Johnson was just lying, as usual.
Posted by: RBMN at March 16, 2006 10:17 AMKermit,
I would respond in greater length but I have to go to work.
BTW, were you able to get yourself pryed out of your Barco Lounger yet? If so, I need my Pry bar back.
You can just leave it outside on the porch next to your hubcap collection.
Posted by: Doug at March 16, 2006 10:35 AMDoug! You forgot your nametag! Hurry, or you'll miss the bus.
Posted by: Kermit at March 16, 2006 10:49 AMDoug, let me get this straight. Your "defense" is that because a leader of your party is stupid enough to admit to what is at best unethical behavior (which includes both the possibilities that Johnson did have the meeting or that he's lying about it), that the other side must do so despite a lack of evidence? Have you ever heard of the psychological term projection?
Only slightly off topic, did you notice that the Schumer DSCC staffer resigned and agreed to plead guilty to getting the Maryland Lt. Gov.'s credit report fraudulently? If she behaves it'll only be 150 hours of community service and the prosecution will be dropped.
Posted by: nerdbert at March 16, 2006 11:35 AM"Nope Mitch. No evidence what-so-ever."
I thought not.
"And there's no direct evidence that Pluto is made of rocks but simple observation and commonsense would certainly suggest that it is."
Planets obey certain physical laws that have been observed over time.
In other words, you're just making it up as you go along again, huh?
Posted by: mitch at March 16, 2006 11:59 AMDean Johnson's poor imitation of Thomas Jefferson should serve notice that he and the DFL will do anything to keep the marriage ammendment off the ballot in the next or any other election cycle. His attempt to slow the momentum this issue has will only serve to push it along faster now . Not only that he has given the legislature something new to add to this sessions limited time frame, namely, Senate/judicial ethics. Nice goin Dean.
My question is this; since there is already a law banning same sex marriage, and in order for it to pass some DFLers had to vote for it, why are they willing to go to these extremes unless they in fact are hoping one day that the Supreme Court does overturn it. This is a classic example of the left's duplicity.

Oh Dougie-boy...I love ya:
"And there's no direct evidence that Pluto is made of rocks but simple observation and commonsense would certainly suggest that it is."
Well, Dougie, as Mitch stated so well: "Planets obey certain physical laws that have been observed over time."
Using your warped-brain logic, having physical evidence is not needed if you have enough proof of the object's existance. If you want to use that logic, let's employ your logic on WMDs in Iraq.
In Dougie's World, as long as you have evidence (and that can be stacked up rather high, from the known yellow-cake/Niger events to the aluminum tubes to simply the gasing of the Kurds) then the WMDs MUST be real, huh Dougie?
Thanks, Dougie-boy...don't forget to change the oil in the fryers today...
Posted by: Dave at March 16, 2006 12:47 PMDave, I doubt Management lets Doug near the fryers. I know I wouldn't. The invention of the barcode scanner was a blessing for him though.
Posted by: Kermit at March 16, 2006 01:14 PMGee Mitch, no we only have evidence of Dickey boy purposefully outing CIA operatives... mkay?
What Johnson did and said was pathetic. He probably ought to simply resign.
Having said that, given your unending defense of the awful things said and done by this administration (like Abu Ghraib, policies of torture, policies to deny civil rights, retreat in the face of likely judicial rebuke, illegal wire-tapping, deficits in the stratosphere), my response is, you have no clothes.
If you'll support Bush, Frist, Cheney, Delay, all resigning - I certainly will endorse Johnson doing the same, but let's be perfectly clear, what Johnson did, discussing his views on same-sex laws, isn't quite the same level of problem as lying about the nature of the Iraqi threat and then going to war.

Damn. I get a drink or two in me and I just do the damnedest things.
Posted by: mitch at March 16, 2006 02:10 PMMitch...clothes...PLEASE...NOOOOOW!
As far as PB...its always nice to hear from another person with BDS.
Posted by: Dave at March 16, 2006 02:52 PMI want my civil rights back, dammit! I have a phone call to Jordan I need to make.
Posted by: Kermit at March 16, 2006 04:10 PMDave,
The whole insult Doug with fast food employment is kermits schtick.
Yours is ranting incoherently while you spray foam out of your mouth.
stick with what you do well ok Dave?
Posted by: Doug at March 16, 2006 06:27 PMDougie...if the schtick fits...its all you.
Again, thanks for not bothering to note that you were just shown to be the hypocrite you really are. You have this great faith in Pluto, based on no direct evidence but you refused to even acknowledge when your hypocrite logic is used against you in the Iraq/WMD issue.
Again, this all relates to Dean Johnson and you seem more intent on believing in little green Martians than seeing how Dean "the Jumper" Johnson has lied through his teeth (and on tape), impugning the entire Minnesota Supreme Court in order to maintain his lie.
Of course, that's pretty normal for you liberal pot-bangers. Now get back to mopping the floors...the job you are qualified for.
Posted by: Dave at March 16, 2006 07:35 PMAnd Dougieboy's schtick is petulantly whining about little petit morts like being called Dougieboy (huge mistake, man) while passing them out with gay abandon.
In your defense, DB, I'd trust you with the fryer.
Posted by: Geoff at March 16, 2006 07:54 PMI mean, really, Dougie-boy...you really make it SO easy. First, you puff out your chest and claim to be some "Election Observer", and I blast away that fictitious bit of tom-foolery and now I have you nailed to the wall on your analogy about Pluto in defending Dean "What? Me?" Johnson.
That's what I love about you liberals. You keep showing me how the weak-minded tin-foil hat clowns of today's liberal movement will leave conservatives running this country for decades to come.
Just make sure my fries are hot...but not too much salt, Dougie-boy!
Posted by: Dave at March 16, 2006 08:00 PMDave. Buddy! Please Stop!
You're rambling. Get a grip there pal before your head explodes.
I'm almost embarassed for you.
Posted by: Doug at March 16, 2006 10:01 PMAnd Dave. Seriously, the whole fast food thing? It's not that funny or original.
At least when kermit uses it, he says fairly witty things buried in his insults. Your whole "you want fries with that" angle was funny when Robbin Williams used it in 1977.
Oh... and Dave... to this point...
"You keep showing me how the weak-minded tin-foil hat clowns of today's liberal movement will leave conservatives running this country for decades to come."
Perhaps you didn't hear... Congress voted to raise the debt ceiling to 9 trillion dollars so the United States could avoid defaulting on it's committments.
When real conservative actually start running the Country, you make sure to let us all know m'kay?
BTW, wasn't it Republicans who were screaming about the national debt during Clintons first term?
Posted by: Doug at March 16, 2006 10:22 PMJust have to say I never insulted Doug by insinuating he worked a MacDonalds.
Posted by: Kermit at March 17, 2006 08:02 AMWe all know he works at CUB.
Doug, it wasn't the Republicans screaming about the debt, it was conservatives. In case you haven't noticed, the conservative wing of the party isn't in control of it right now. While you in the liberal loony wing of the DFL don't have the nuance to notice, GWB isn't much of a conservative -- he's claimed a mantle of a new branch of conservatism that doesn't include fiscal conservatism, nor a devotion to small government, nor defense of our borders, etc. In fact, much of his popularity drop has been due to ticking off the conservative base in the GOP.
We'll let you know when real conservatives start running things, Doug. We'll know by your screams.
Posted by: nerdbert at March 17, 2006 08:04 AMnerdbert:
You are certainly correct. Technically, the conservatives do NOT have a control of the country. I guess I was a bit rash in claiming so. The budgets have been spiraling out of control for years, and not particularly due to military operations. Social programs and education spending has sky-rocketed.
As far as you, Dougie-boy, I will paint you the way I want, as your lack of debate skills and shear lies (see: "Election Observer") are exactly what liberals are today: A bunch of kids (or adults with the mentality of a teenager) who are bitter and angry about how they've screwed their lives into the ground and they want to make sure the rest of the country pays them not to work or be productive members of a functional society.
Now, Dougie-bob...make sure you give me an extra ketchup packet or two with my burger...chop...chop.
Posted by: Dave at March 17, 2006 08:48 AMWhenever he's in trouble, it's always "Reverend Johnson." Al Sharpton is always "Reverend." So is Jesse Jackson. It's as if the Left believes they're such sanctified persons that any criticism must be heresy, couldn't possibly be in good faith.
So where's Dean Johnson's church?
Or do you get the Reverend title just for being a minister? Hell, you can get ordained on-line for free, and for $5.00 Ramsey County will cheerfully file your flashy new ordination credentials. Voila, instant minister.
And also immune from criticism.
.
Posted by: nathan.bissonette at March 17, 2006 08:56 AMBut lets get back to the post at hand...Dean "I said X but I really meant Y" Johnson. I have noted an interesting connection between Deanie and our little burger-flipper Dougie:
Deanie is now saying "I embellished it", in regards to his conversations with members of the Supreme Court. Interestingly, if you read what ALL the other members of the Court are now saying, they almost call Deanie a liar and that no conversations took place.
Deanie is also saying the reason for the embellishment is to get a group of pastors to back-off on a political issue (the marriage amendment). That's right, its ok to lie to constituants to get them off your back.
This embellishment is just the same as Dougie-boy. He puffs himself up as an "Election Observer", in the hopes of using this semi-official title to lend credibility to his election day games.
For liberals like Deanie and Dougie, its ok to throw out lies to support your position and lend credibility to your arguement. But...as we see with both of them...when you nail them on their lies, they blame the accusers and attack them for being big meanies...ignoring their misconduct.
Birds of a feather...lose together.
Posted by: Dave at March 17, 2006 09:04 AMDave, Dave, Dave...
Where to start...
"The budgets have been spiraling out of control for years, and not particularly due to military operations."
You are technically correct here. The supplemental funding requests that the White House needs to keep asking for are not in the Budget. It goes right to the bottom line and is added to the national debt.
If you were honest with the American People, you would line item that in the budget but that would open the issue for scrutiny. The Republican controlled Congress can't let that happen.
"Social programs and education spending has sky-rocketed."
The administration requested $56 billion for the Department of Education, a reduction of a half billion dollars, or 0.9 percent, from the previous spending plan.
The budget that was passed in the Senate cut an additional 56 million from Bush's request.
Sky-rocketing I tell you... It's OUT OF CONTROL!
"As far as you, Dougie-boy, I will paint you the way I want"
Ohhhh... That sounds no... Naughty...! Tell me stud... Should I bring wine to our "sitting" or would you prefer we forgo with the formality and get right down to business...?
"your lack of debate skills and shear lies"
I MUST take offense to that accusation. I never lie about my wool preparation methods and I'll thank you to please refrain from tossing accusations about willy nilly. And might I add, buy a dictionary. Good Day Sir...
"...what liberals are today: A bunch of kids (or adults with the mentality of a teenager) who are bitter and angry about how they've screwed their lives into the ground and they want to make sure the rest of the country pays them not to work or be productive members of a functional society."
Yes Dave... I've screwed my life into the ground - all 5 acres of it with fabulous views of the Birch and red oak woods and a lovely pond that we've cleared for skating parties and the rolling hills... Ahhh the lovely rolling hills that you've bought for us. And thank you for the cabin as well... We've so enjoyed spending time there with family and friends. We owe it all to you Dave. You and the other productive members of a functional society.
"make sure you give me an extra ketchup packet or two with my burger"
I don't work remember? Get your own damn extra ketchup packet. I'm busy enjoying the spectacular homestead you bought me.
Posted by: Doug at March 17, 2006 01:02 PMJust curious if anybody here has heard the full contents of the tape, and not just the Johnson excerpt. It might be interesting to hear the context of his remarks, especially in light of the ethics charge coming against him now. Unfortunately, I can't find the whole audio or transcript anywhere...
