I get a fair amount of comments on this site. Occasionally an interesting question pops up.
Reader "Joshua" - a blogger, actually, although I don't really care to dig up the URL - is a classy guy. Seriously - a genuine role model for our kids:
But seriously, AK, does it ever occur to you to give poor Mitch a reach-around when you're burrowing up his a**? He sounds like he could use it and, frankly, coming up for air every so often might do you some good too. With that combination of class and logic, it's hard to believe he could have left this complaint:
I stopped visiting this blog visits to Planet Mitch were ultimately unrewarding. Mitch is never wrong on Planet MitchHe is both classy and perceptive.
Am I ever wrong on "Planet Mitch" (I still prefer "Shot In The Dark")? Occasionally. Sure.
Not often, of course. The prime product of this blog is my opinion. I do some reporting, some passing on of other peoples' reporting, and some stuff that's probably more "diary" than anything. But for the most part, this is Mitch's Screed Zone.
Now - am I ever wrong? Of course. It's hard to get to 43 years old, and raise kids, and exist in the adult working world without getting a firm sense of one's own fallibility.
Naturally, the stuff of this blog - politics, music, current events, culcha - are not immune to that infallibility.
But if you think you're right and I'm wrong, here are a couple of pointers:
Oh, yeah, right. Now you're attacking innocent 6th graders and underserved Mississippi prison inmates, you sexist, racist, fascist pig! You hate schoolchildren! You're discriminating against Mississippi prison inmates! Have you no decency at all? Can't you just be fair? What about equality and justice? It's people like you who are ruining the country. 7th Grade isn't for everybody, you know, and who are you to judge Mississippi prison inmates, you right-wing kook!
Posted by: Eracus at March 1, 2006 09:08 AMMitch... you were wrong??? When was that?
Posted by: Pete (Alois) at March 1, 2006 09:08 AMInteresting posting…Least everyone who reads this blog forgets, Mitch stirs the pot of blogosphere (public) opinion. Which means:
People on the left of center will become emotive and illogical at his writing. Their logic will turn to emotions and the rest of us will through up our hands because reason will no longer prevail.
The privilege of us being able to share in Mitch’s writing is given, it is not ours to expect and demand. A measure of courtesy not only shows your character as a reader, but the lack of it shows your ignorance. And while it may be cool to be an a** in your circle of friends, you are just still an a** to the rest of us.
It Mitch’s writing does not edify you, go away. That is not to say if you disagree go away. (why do I feel like I’m writing to 4th graders.)
Most everything that Mitch writes is going to be right in his mind. It is a display of what he thinks about the subjects and topics that are important to him. The fact that a couple of thousand people hit this site everyday, and that PB and Angry Clown go off like they do, does not make him right in his opinions. But it does make him interesting, and most importantly there are over 2000 people everyday that tune in and THINK about what they have read. Agree or disagree, this is a delightfully addicting blog.
Most people on the left don’t like to be stirred or told they are wrong…..that’s not a bad thing, it’s just a condition of maturity.
Finally, the measure of a man to the largest extent is not that he has life, but how he lives it. This blog and the man who writes it lives as all men should live. I challenge you to live in the same mold. It doesn’t matter if you are like Mitch, or PB…just live life!
Carpie Diem!
(This is a paid endorsement brought to you by Chris. Mitch, I expect lunch the next time I’m in town.)
Posted by: Chris at March 1, 2006 09:33 AMGo ahead Mitch, dock me for points!! (type to fast and you get ahead of yourself)
Posted by: chris at March 1, 2006 09:56 AMNow you are attacking the 4th Graders! Is there no end to your right-wing kooky hate and anger?
Just wait til PB sees this, you insensitive brute.
Posted by: Eracus at March 1, 2006 10:22 AMMitch reflected "It's hard to get to 43 years old, and raise kids, and exist in the adult working world without getting a firm sense of one's own fallibility"
How can you have a firm sense of fallibility? What if you're wrong about this?
Posted by: Kermit at March 1, 2006 10:36 AMI have noticed that occasionally when someone brings something up in the comments, which could reasonably force you to reconsider your opinion on something, you don't respond to it - it just ends up in the recycle bin. You're rather Bushian in that way, saying you're fallible but never demonstrating an acknowledgement of that on your blog (although I know that face to face you're not like that at all, its just in here that its noticable). But then, its your blog, your rules, and I only bought it up because you did, and it doesn't really bother me since I see it as a boundary issue.
The only thing that comes to mind at the moment is when you were doing your evangelical media image pity party and someone (well, alright, me) documented several examples of powerful figures within the Christian Right evangelical movement saying and doing wacky and hateful things. Oh, and that time two years back when you got Jesus confused with the Davidic archetype represented in Gandolf, despite Jesus's strenuous objects in the scriptures to comparisions with a secular messiah -- but I'll ascribe that to undue influence from Peter Jackson and the figurehead presented in Revelation.
Posted by: Bill Haverberg at March 1, 2006 11:26 AM"I have noticed that occasionally when someone brings something up in the comments...you don't respond to it"
Because once a subject falls off my limited attention span, it's gone. It's pretty easy to get the "last word" in my comments section; wait until my attention and energy are devoted elsewhere.
I enjoy the comment section - but I don't focus or devote much energy to it.
" You're rather Bushian in that way, saying you're fallible but never demonstrating an acknowledgement of that on your blog"
Acknowledging what? That I'm stretched too thin to follow every thread to a conclusion? Or to respond with court-ready details on every allegation brought up in comments?
Duly noted on both counts!
"Oh, and that time two years back when you got Jesus confused with the Davidic archetype represented in Gandolf, despite Jesus's strenuous objects in the scriptures to comparisions with a secular messiah -- but I'll ascribe that to undue influence from Peter Jackson and the figurehead presented in Revelation."
All art is in the eye of the beholder. I owe nothing to Tolkien. I don't think it's a stretch at all to see Gandalf's resurrection as a Christ-like allegory - in fact, I think it'd be odd NOT to acknowledge its possibility. Bear in mind, I'm viewing the dispute as an English major (which I was), not a theology major (which I wasn't) or a big Tolkien fan (I'm not).
Posted by: mitch at March 1, 2006 11:46 AMEracus,
Nice laugh at the end of a s****** day! Thank's!
And I'm going to guess that PB would probably say the say the same thing, looking back from his side of the pond.
Could it be that both sides may be right? (or is one side still left)

Perhaps you can address in a blog at some point the fact that Bush was told the leavies in N.O. were in jeapordy 24 hours before landfall and then came out days afterward and said no one anticipated it. The lame excuse from the W.H. is that it was because Katrina was a Cat 5 Hurricane, but hit N.O. only as a Cat 3. That's something like saying, well, when the Germans launched their offensive with 50 divisions, 24 hours before they struck us, we were REALLY concerned, but because untested troops were SUPPOSED to be able to stop 40 divisions, and well they were 40 divisions at the precise moment, we didn't think there would be a problem.
Your defense of Bush then, was as wrong as it would be now.
PB
BTW- regarding scatalogical assaults, perhaps you can explain why you so often started your posts with terms like "spittle-flecked moron", pot, meet kettle.
Posted by: pb at March 2, 2006 08:12 AM"Perhaps you can address in a blog at some point the fact that Bush was told the leavies [sic] in N.O. were in jeapordy [sic]"
Perhaps I will. In a post *on that topic*.
"Your defense of Bush then, was as wrong as it would be now."
Well, then I hardly need to write about it, then, do I?
"perhaps you can explain why you so often started your posts with terms like "spittle-flecked moron"
That's not scatological. Look it up.
Posted by: mitch at March 2, 2006 08:22 AMTo follow up, PB,
"Perhaps you can address in a blog at some point the fact that Bush was told the leavies [sic] in N.O. were in jeapordy [sic]"
I needn't write anything - Powerline already did.
Read it.

Yet again, the mainstream media is jerking the public around.
Except, of course, those who are predisposed to being jerked.
Posted by: mitch at March 2, 2006 10:32 AMThus spake Chris: "Carpie Diem!"
This is latin for "Take the day off to go fishing"
Posted by: Bill C at March 2, 2006 10:42 AMPB,

I'll await your response.
Posted by: mitch at March 2, 2006 12:17 PMMitch,
I love this: you tell people you "count off for spelling" and then you do it yourself two sentences later. ("inliteracy" is two words)
What an idiot.
First and last time on this blog.
Posted by: RZ at March 6, 2006 11:19 AMYeah, there is NOTHING more risky than posting on someone elses grammer/spelling short comings. Posts like that need to be spell checked/peer reviewed at least a dozen times before hitting the Post button, because sure as Bill Clinton has a Thing for fat interns, you will screw it up.
That said, I have to say that Mitch is right more often than he is wrong, and the typical leftist mouth breather that wanders in here looking for a fight usually only succeeds in convincing everyone how truly stoopid (intentional mispelling, by the way, so don't hyperventilate...) they are.
I expect someone in this thread to confirm that opinion momentarily....
