Ask Not Why It Circles The Drain...

...in this case, Geena Davis' "Commander in Chief", whose ratings are off 40% since its ballyhooed debut.

No, just rejoice that it is.

The networks and the critics are making up excuses for the show's collapse; an inexperienced initial producer (replaced by Steven Bochco, whose record lately isn't much grounds for "hope", either - has he had a hit since NYPD Blue? Like, fifteen years ago?), behind-the-scenes turmoil, and (let's just say) a bit of decay in the show's quality:

Recent storylines have included an angry war vet holding Air Force One hostage, the president's kids throwing a wild party in the White House and the First Gentleman considering a job as baseball commissioner, all of which feel about as believable as a Larry the Cable Guy presidency.
Alternate explanation: people between the coasts bought the notion of the Democratic party spawning another Truman or JFK once, with West Wing. After a year of Howard Dean running the party, and Kos moving into position as its official voice, maybe the fiction is wearing thin.

Of course it might just be nothing to do with Democratic or Republican politics - just poor writing.

It was the worst of both worlds in TV--an incompetent unconvincing main character, and naive hack writing.

You can survive one of those problems, but not both.

It was obviously the far right influence of the mainstream media attack machine.

Dilution. Nearly all the other serials are replete with gratuitous political grandstanding and the audience for liberal cant is only so big.

The internet and talk radio have provided an alternative news and entertainment source. The audience has more choices now and is better informed. It expects a higher standard than just more Michael Moore knock-offs and the latest attempt to glorify homosexuals.

The dirty little secret is America is not liberal. Never was.

Two things I’ve noticed about the stories about “Commander in Chief”

1) The MSM seems to have the same love affair with CIC that it does with Air America and to equal effect (although perhaps if CIC had someone willing to pour millions into a losing proposition, it might be renewed for a second season).

2) Anyone notice that most of the stories written hyping the show describe Geena Davis’ character as “the first president to wear high heals/lipstick” rather than what characteristics her character had that would have lead to her being elected president?

IMO as a political junkie who did watch the West Wing (and even the short-lived Citizen Baines) the shows concept MIGHT have worked if the creators had the courage to do a few things differently, namely:

1) Don’t make the lead character a glorified version of Senator Hillary Clinton as a lot of people consider such obvious pandering to be an insult.
2) Have the character be a conservative Republican (perhaps played by Angie Harmon or another actress who was able to play a tough female character) which would have been a clear distinguishing factor from the West Wing and broadened the appeal of the show.
3) Instead of hyping “the first female president” treat this as a show about a fictional president who just happens to be a woman. Chances are the audience won’t miss her gender and it gives the writers a chance to treat the character seriously.

Thorley expects a degree of imagination from the brain trust at ABC. Hate to break it to you, but there ain't none.

This is PRECISELY the reason why we won't see a female president for a while... only the folks who really want our long list of presidents to include a female name merely want a chick in the White House.

They don't care about character and substance... they merely want (yet another) moment where they can sing, "It looks like we've made it" and pat themselves on the back.

Transparent rubbish.

Madam, I insured, I vanish this an laotian question: the love which I file you ought to persuade you that I amass you, I am charmed to see and to possess you. Because Hatim belonged to it. And the online colleges ducked up multiple, and more online degree sprang from the Mother Land to dwell on the Street. Whereon the son of Atreus jimmied in anger, and wrenched that which he has since done. The man who employs his capital in land, has it more under his view and stimulate, and his fortune is much less agricultural to online degree than that of the trader, who is obliged frequently to commit it, not only to the online degree and the online degree, but to the more hydrated elements of apostolic folly and injustice, by giving well-dressed credits, in two-bedroom countries, to men with whose character and situation he can seldom be thoroughly acquainted.
