It was just a shade over three years ago that the contract I was working on got un-funded in mid-recession. I spent five months with no work at all, and five more with just subsistence work - 40-60 hours a month. I had two kids, and my bills never stopped. A few people dropped a few bucks in my Honor System drop box; it meant the world to me (and a couple weeks' groceries, too). Little things mean a lot when you're up against it.
"Stop The ACLU" notes that Brian from Iowa Voice is in some dire straits:
Back in December, just before Christmas, I was fired from my job due to a change in management. I managed to land a new job that was to start right after Christmas, but it was with a guy who was going to open a restaurant and he needed to remodel it. It’s now a full month later, and he’s not ready. I am still out of a job. Please help if you can. Posted by Mitch at February 1, 2006 10:34 AM | TrackBackI’m seriously overdue with my bills. My home phone and cell phone were shut off today. My electric bill is due today, and will probably be shut off tomorrow or soon after.
My internet is overdue, too, and will probably be shut down this week. That means I won’t be able to blog and, worse yet, I won’t be able to finish my college studies (I’m taking a course on Computer Network Management, so I can change careers).
My gas bill is overdue (in Iowa, though, I think there’s a law that says they can’t shut that off during the winter.).
My house payment is due tomorrow.
I have a wife and two kids. My wife is a substitute teacher, but they rarely call. Now they won’t be able to at all.
I hate to be a jerk here but I really would like to know a couple things here...
If Brian lost a job because of a change in management, he should be collecting unemployment. He would have at least something coming in.If he told his creditors the situation and he made a good faith effort to at least try to pay part of his bills, they wouldn't cut him off.
He was laid off just before Christmas and he says he is seriously overdue with his bills? That was a month and a half ago. How do you get seriously over due in a month and a half?
Come on... This isn't adding up.
Then there's this. He was offered a job but the place had to be remodeled first. OK...
Brian is in restaurant management and yet he didn't occure to him that remodeling a restaurant would take a while? Why the hell didn't he go find a job to cover the expenses in the interim?
Even if he was told the remodeling would be done right after Christmas, anyone in a management position would know better.
Sorry for being a dick here but omethings not right about this.
Posted by: Doug at February 1, 2006 09:46 PMI've explained all of this in my blog over the past few months. I understand your concerns, and I was reluctant to even mention it to anyone. Great fodder for the left, you know?
The fact is, I took a new job in the summer of last year. I had a major illness that forced me to take a leave of absence for about two months. That ate into my savings accounts. I then had a major car repair to have done, and that took the last of it. A few weeks later, I lost my job.
Since I hadn't had enough hours/pay with the new employer, I didn't qualify for unemployment.
I kind of knew in advance that I may be losing my job, so I was already on the hunt. I had the thing lined up "just in case" it happened, and when it did, I called him and let him know I was available. That was (I think) the first week of December. He told me the remodel would be done and they would be ready to open on the 26th (two weeks later).
When the time came, he wasn't ready. His contractor had messed something up and was behind. Everytime I called him, it was one thing after another.
I'm still looking for another job, and if I find one before he calls and says "ok", I'll take it and say to heck with him. But if I haven't found anything, I'll pretty much have to take it (I will still keep looking, though).
The fact is, the last time I paid my bills was in November....before I lost my job. When they were due in December, I needed to save the money from my last check to pay for food and gas.
January, I was overdue. Then, they sent disconnect notices unless they were paid this month.
I hope that clears this up. I don't want anybody thinking for even a minute that this was a ploy or anything. I've been extremely open and honest on my blog about this over the last few months, and it was painful for me to send that email, believe me.
But, I had to. I have a wife and two kids to look out for. If it weren't for the fact that I had to use our savings, I would have had enough for this. I always keep an emergency backup "just in case". In this instance, the "just in case" happened twice within a short period of time.

I was glad to see you responded to Doug's post with dignity. You're a better man than I.

Posted by: Geoff at February 2, 2006 05:40 AMThanks Brian,
Like I said, I'm sorry for being a dick and bringing this up but from the little I read at SITD, it sounded pretty suspect to me.
What I think is pretty interesting is that you describe a situation where a two month illness essentially wiped you out. It was our side that kept fighting to keep protections in place for people in your position.
It's tough to feel sypmathy when your side fought us at every turn.
I apologize for jumping to conclusions about your situation and even though I am a committed Pagan who worships rocks and twigs, I will make an effort to act more Christian-like.
I do hope everything works out for you and your family and I will be sending what I can.

Actually, I think I demonstrated perfectly the Republican stance on this: I planned ahead long ago. Everyone should make those plans, regardless of their situation. The government shouldn't be "mom and dad" to everyone.
Certainly, there needs to be programs in place to help those in genuine need, but we've gone way to far in coddling people in the last 60 or so years.
It's a simple fact: if you pay someone to not work, they're not going to. Give them an incentive to go to work, and they will. There's no better incentive than knowing that it all can come crashing down on you.
I'm still pounding the pavement everyday looking for a new job, in case this one doesn't pan out. If I find one before he calls and says "ok, we're ready", great! If not, I can still go to work for him and keep looking, hoping that he doesn't accidentally burn the joint down. lol
