Just a reminder that Reaganmas - the celebration of the birthday of Ronald Reagan, February 6 - is coming up in a little under three weeks.
In last years' celebration, I put out a pot of jelly beans at my cube at work, and took my kids out for dinner, came home, built a wall out of snow around the yard and then tore it down, and then played pinata (with a papier-mache Helen Caldicott, no less!), after which the candy (jelly beans, natch) trickled down.
It's the fourth-most-wonderful time of the year (after Easter, Christmas and Fourth Of July), a time for family and friends and good cheer and dancing on the grave of world socialism.
Feel free to share your family's Reaganmas traditions.

The Clown family celebrates by selling weapons to an Iranian family down the block.
Posted by: angryclown at January 17, 2006 08:17 AMThe day also has great personal significance to me... partially because of Reagan's birthday.
It's my wedding anniversary. :D
Posted by: badda-blogger at January 17, 2006 09:30 AMWe get together to try to take the Reagan OUT of ReaganMas, thereby cheapening the birth of our lord and savior.
And then we read "Great Pervaricator", like the one where Ronnie (who I think was 1000 times better a Prez than Bush) said that Carter got off the plane in Warsaw and kissed the ground, saying, "It's nice to be in a free country." Of course, Carter never said that, but then again, he never went to Poland either...
After that, with total ideologic control of my kids, I like to pass huge spending bills and blame the Congress for them, even though I could have vetoed them, but of course, with the majority of my party voting for them, why would I?
Yep, Ronnie, a true american hero, to those who hate America as it is, and want to tear down anything which gets in their way, like checks and balances.

2. I'll "Just Say No" to any DFL campaign or Air America donation requests.
3. I'll pray for Mao Tse Thune's constituents.

"Of course, Carter never said that, but then again, he never went to Poland either..."
Mikey,
Jimmy Carter did visit Poland.

In fact, there's a humorous story of his translater being fired, but I'll leave that to the guys at NIGP...
Posted by: Just Me at January 17, 2006 03:48 PMMikey, I was born and lived in Poland until I was twenty. My family came to Sewden and then America in 1981.
My grandfather, who fought in the 1939-1945 war, until the day he died kept photos of Pope John Paul II and Reagan in his living room. Also the same with my father, who was in sympathy with Solidarity. And my older brother and uncle whom the ZOMO beat the shit out of, their love of Reagan and Pope John Paul II would light a room.
So when you say "Yep, Ronnie, a true american hero, to those who hate America as it is, and want to tear down anything which gets in their way, like checks and balances", I as someone who lived very much opposite know you as full of shit. The Pope John Paul II and Reagan saved my country and my life. And while I prefer to not call it Reaganmas also, I shall celebrate.
Posted by: tnowak at January 17, 2006 04:10 PMWe celebrate by dressing up in fatigues and going around the neighborhood identifying brown skinned people who we believe are either Socialists or Communists... Who am I kidding... They're all Communists right?!? and then we butcher them and burn down their homes.
Posted by: Doug at January 17, 2006 04:17 PMI declare the bank of snow the plow left in front of my neighbor's house to be evil; when it eventually melts I go to my neighbor and say "Aren't you glad I got rid of that snowbank for you?" Then I forget stuff.

Quick - name a credible, mainstream pre-1990 leftist who predicted the imminent fall of the USSR.
Because I can name a stack of them who, up until the day the first pick fell on the Berlin Wall, insisted the USSR was here to stay.
Just because the fall of communism happened didn't make it inevitable all along.

When DID that nasty civil war in El Salvador start?
How did it get resolved?
Who started the policy that resolved it?
What were the specifics?
Canned answers will be mercilessly shredded.

Predicting something doesn't mean you caused it. I foresee your lawn greening up come spring. You're welcome.
A quick Google on your query reveals Emmanuel Todd, who made his prediction in 1976. Politically speaking I think 15 years qualifies as imminent.
Posted by: Tim at January 17, 2006 07:11 PMThanks, PB. I'm not there yet, although every indicator says our marriage will weather the coming three weeks just fine. ;)
I'm surprised (and obviously quite pleased) you took this thread in stride... but can you believe the absolute venom from those other Left-Leaners?
Posted by: badda-blogger at January 17, 2006 07:33 PMIt isn’t really the Reagan haters fault. They all just miss the peace and prosperity the country knew during the Carter years. In fact the 12 of 20 years of peace and prosperity the country knew from 1961-1969 and 1977-1981. (subtracting for the evil Republican years when we had the Vietnam war and inflation and unemployment and illegal wire taps (just Nixon of course, the Martin Luther King thing was all Hoover, who we know just HAD to be a Republican) and other bad stuff) Oh, to go back to the wonderful days of skittles and rainbows for all. Also, what the hell was Reagan doing passing all those bills? Didnt he know that was Congress's job? Damn fascists.
