The Latest Boogeyman

Still listening to Biden on the Today show. He's mentioned "going to war in Iran without Congressional approval" three or four times.

It'll be interesting to see whether Feinstein, Kennedy, Leahy and the various Democrat talking heads continue with the "war with Iran" theme. Regardless of their view (or, heh heh, the facts) of Presidential war powers, these hearings are not about Alito to the Democrats; they're about inflaming the Morvons (MoveOn.org members) for fundraising purposes for the fall's campaign.

War in Iran? Geez it's hard to keep up. You blink and this guy invades a new country.

Well, at least if you listen to Slow Joe and Fat Teddy, he could.

What's the distance between Iran and NYC as the ICBM flies? Wouldn't it be nice to have a missle shield?

Kermey, would you like to bet your child's life on a 90% chance it might work?

How about this, if a missile shield worked 95% of the time, then if the Russians launched, only something like 200 Warheads would get through, gee, that seems really happy.

The reason we believed in the ABM Treaty was two-fold, first, it pushed us into another, and even more dangerous arms race..

Second, you didn't want some chuckleheaded fool, and I KNOW I can't think of one, but some fool thinking he could actually WIN a nuclear exchange.

Now I think I've got that Russia does not really pose a danger of war with us, however, as No Korea does not posess ICBM's, nor does Iran (yet in both cases), but rather IRBM's in NK's case - with the fear mongering claim that they perhaps soon could develop one to reach our west coast - anyway, your comments are a bit innacurate.

Nevertheless, the issue is that if we develop a missile shield, then essentially we are saying to NKorea (or Iran) or whomever, find another way, and gosh, like it hasn't already been proven that they could use an airliner..

Lastly, the danger doesn't come from a state - the concept of state sponsored terrorism is essentially dead, even GWB has stated it, but rather from small, determined groups who certainly are NOT going to expend 4-5 BILLION dollars (minimum) to come up with the technology and missile (singular) necessary to launch an SRBM, SLBM, IRBM, ICBM, ALCM or any other kind of interceptable missile. States like NK understand it's pure suicide (as does Iran), so your boogeyman is really a strawman, and Al Qaeda doesn't have to use a missile. In the end, therefore, there is ZERO need of a missile shield, states with small arsenals aren't controlled by a horde of suicidal, fratricidal maniacs, states with large arsenals understand we can't really protect against large attacks, and whacko's like Bin Laden won't use anything we'll stop with Stupid Defense Initiatives.

Oh.. btw, Mitch, I agree, it's grandstanding, for as Biden said, these hearings are useless.

We'll see whether Specter has the cajones to follow through on his intention to investigate the wiretaps, he clearly blanched here at the idea of pressing Alito on whether he should sit in judgement of his benefactor on law he has already said he favors expanding/being an activist on.

Mikey,
You say States like NK and Iran understand it's pure suicide to launch an attack and I agree. Have you noticed that Muslim fanatics don't exactly shy away from suicide?
Iranian President Amedinutjob has made it clear he would sacrifice all 40 million of his people for the Great Jihad. He knows that everyone goes to Paradise and a virgin group grope. That leaves roughly 960 million Muslims behind to carry on what would then be a most holy war.
95% is better than 0%, dont'cha think?
