A Sea Of Palms In An Ocean Of Snow

First Ringer has an excellent piece on the Pennsylvania Senate race over at KVM.

Which, while I encourage you to read KVM as well as his own excellent The First Ring blog, is not something I'd normally link.

However, the title and first line grabbed me:

When the Heat’s On, I Went Down
In a Big Country, the race in Steeltown is king.
Not just a quote from Big Country, one of my favorite bands - but from Steeltown, one of my ten favorite albums of all time.

Cool.

Yeah, I'd say that Santorum has an uphill battle this time around. Not from the Democrats, but from Republicans. And that's without any opposition in the primary.

Rick was a great grass-roots candidate back in 1990 when he first ran for Congress in my district, but he's changed since then. He's managed to alienate a lot of his supporters by getting involved in places where he has no business.

A few weeks ago, I heard a former candidate for local office describe how Rick, via operatives, tried to interfere in a Republican primary campaign and then blatantly lie when he was called on it. That was almost ten years ago. His profile has risen in recent years because he has tried to keep his name in the news as much as possible. Fine, whatever, a politician needs publicity, but the grass roots here is mortified. Everything that Rick does is all about Rick, whether it's writing a book or visiting Terri Schiavo's family. That doesn't tell us that Rick is working for Pennsylvania, or for the Republican party. He's in it for himself.

He's been conservative enough not to alienate the base in PA. But don't expect to see a lot of Republicans down here to go out of their way to show support for him. Those Pennsylvanians you see coming out of the voting booth holding their noses this coming November will be Santorum voters.
