Story Of The Year

Kool Aid Report Flava Aid Report is polling for the top Minnesota Organization of Bloggers news stories of 2005. Go and vote.

Among the condenders:

  • Bogus Doug spills martini on keyboard; Hillarity ensues
  • The commencement of open hostilities between Mitch "City Boy" Berg and JB "Redneck" Doubtless [MITCH ADDS: Which is pretty funny, considering I'm from North Dakota and JB is from like Orono or Excelsior or someplace like that]
  • LearnedFoot passed over twice for Supreme Court nomination
  • Sisyphus' reaps windfall from purchase of Halliburton stock
  • Dumb leftyblogger actually believes that Sisyphus reaped windfall from purchase of Halliburton stock [MITCH ADDS: This was on my short list]
  • Brian "St. Paul" Ward contemplates standing in a long line for a free burrito [MITCH ADDS: Human drama at its finest]
  • Topsy turvey MOB mayoral election results in a dark horse winner and the liberation of Kevin Ecker
  • Ryan Rhodes' "ginormous" poop
  • Governor snubs funny bloggers [MITCH ADDS: ...and invites the best anyway.]
  • James Lileks discovered to be moonlighting as Bob Balaban
  • Entire MOB commemorated wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald; Titanic sinking anniversary goes unobserved as Gordon Lightfoot failed to write song about it [MITCH ADDS: Well, that and it being like the thirtieth anniversary and all. And Titanic being way overexposed and a sucky movie. Although Kevin Kling did a play based on the Fitz. Which brings up a question - is Kevin Kling any relation to Bill "I Will Control Public Media Worldwide" Kling? That might explain why Kevin is the official Twin Cities playwrite of MPR. Just asking. Leave a comment if you know. ]
Vote! We're burning daylight!

Notwithstanding that this year's anniversary of the EF's sinking was an even number, Titanic's casualty numbers were staggering in comparison (1500 vs. 30). Not to mention that dozens of ore (and other types of) boats have gone down in the great lakes, but only one was memorialized in song.

Plus, the sinking of the Titanic hold much deeper allegorical and historical significance: the end of the era of the idle rich, man having to rethink his supposed dominance over nature, the dangers of hubris, etc.

The movie may have descended into suckitute by virtue of it's tacked on fictional schmaltz, but it was notable for it's attention to the physical details of the ship and hella cool special effects.

And let's not forget that the Titanic did spawn a wonderful book "A Night to Remember".
