Goodnight, Sanity

One of my favorite parts about having kids was reading "Goodnight Moon", the forties-era classic by Margaret Wise Brown, with the gorgeous illustration work of Clement Hurd...

...who was pictured on the original book sleeve holding a cigarette.

According to writer Louis Bayard, that could not do:

In a newly revised edition of the book, which has lulled children to sleep for nearly 60 years, the publisher, HarperCollins, has digitally altered the photograph of Clement Hurd, the illustrator, to remove a cigarette from his hand ... .

"It is potentially a harmful message to very young kids," (Kate) Jackson (editor in chief of HarperCollins Children's Books) said, "and it doesn't need to be there."

Be sure to read Bayard's Politically Correct "Goodnight Moon".

I'm on your side re: smoking bans in bars, etc, but I gotta disagree with you here Mitch. I have read Goodnight Moon a jillion times to my kids (4 and 6). Hurd looks very cool and suave with cig in hand, but there is no reason for the cig to be there. I have had the 'yes, he has a cigarette... lots of people used to smoke back then before they knew how harmful it is' talk with my daughter so I guess it could be seen as a teaching opportunity, but there's really no good reason for the cig to be there if it can be Photoshopped out of the picture. I'm quick to call PC on people these days, but this doesn't bother me. I'm more surprised that it took them so long.

Interesting. If a glimpse of a cigarette in someone's hand has a harmful impact on kids, I wonder how they feel about the sex and violence on prime time tv? Or maybe I don't have to wonder; 30 second cigarette commercials on tv are illegal, but complaining about 30 minutes of bed-hopping and profanity is censorship.

That is nothing. Remember awhile ago that jaunty picture with FDR with the pince-nez glasses and the great smile and the airbrush removed his cigarette and holder...This was from the cover of a computer history game....

Very 1984-ish and Memory hole...

p.s. Mitch someone is pitching porn on your Haloscan comments section.
