The Senate slammed the door shut on the Dem notion of forcing a pull-out from Iraq.
The 50-38 vote wasn't entirely on party lines: Lincoln Chafee voted for the bill, while Pryor (AR), Lieberman (CT)(!), both Nelsons (FL and NE), and North Dakota's Kent Conrad (scuttling at least briefly away from Red-State Liberal status in the last year before his re-election bid; Byron Dorgan voted for the bill) nixed the bill.
Minnesota's duo broke predictably along party lines.
ANALYSIS: Good. Thank God. However you stand on the war, you have to realize that there can be nothing dumber than giving a well-financed group of terrorists an iron-clad "All Clear" date.
Don't you?
UPDATE: Yep. Lieberman's from Connecticut, not Jersey.
I was busy planning a vacation at the time, I guess.

"Don't you?"
They don't. Either that or, they do but don't care and destroying Bush is more important.
Posted by: Bill C at November 15, 2005 04:35 PMLieberman NJ or CT? I don't know of the former. Unless you meant Lautenberg, which would really floor me.
Posted by: kb at November 15, 2005 04:49 PMConnecticut is where you will find Casa Hadassah, my friend, not New Jersey.
Posted by: angryclown at November 15, 2005 05:16 PM"Casa Hadassah". I am stealing that. Try to collect.
Posted by: kb at November 15, 2005 06:03 PMAnd who says you get a vacation, Mitch?
Posted by: kb at November 15, 2005 06:04 PMJoe Lieberman is great. I desperately wanted a Lieberman v. Bush campaign in '04. Having two grown-ups running would have sent a loud and clear message to terrorists, er, "insurgents" that no matter who wins the election there will be no change in policy, no sniveling multi-lateralism, and you're still screwed. I'll never forgive the democratic party for not understanding this and delivering a credible candidate.
Posted by: chriss at November 15, 2005 10:13 PMOf course I knew it was never going to happen; I use my in-laws and siblings as a gauge of the far left fringe (aka Democratic primary voters) and they followed the same "Howard Dean is awesome, er, Wesley Clark is our saviour, um, I loved John Kerry from the beginning" thought progression.
If all democrats were like Lieberman I might still be one. (This is where "Doug" cleverly refers to my previous comments about not really being a democrat in the early 80's to trap me in a hideous lie... right after he gets done proof reading the phone book for minor typographical errors or whatever else he does for fun.)
Chriss: Heck, up until the Reagan Revolution there wasn't much difference between the Dems and the GOP. When Reagan won the nomination and took over the GOP is when the country began to get "polarized." And yes, I was a Democrat back then, but nothing could ever have gotten me to support Carter after his abysmal performance as President. Carter's background sounded extremely impressive when he was campaigning, but his performance through those admittedly tough four years was so bad that he deserved to be buried by that landslide. And the Democrats' reaction to Reagan was essentially one of an auto-immune system run amok: they began a purge of the libertarian, moderate, and pro-defense elements of their party in order to assure themselves of their moral superiority. While I wasn't a Reagan fan at the start, he won me over during his tenure and the Democrats' actions assured me that they'd not seriously compete for my vote for a long time.

Good thinking, "Chriss." I'd listen to Rush if he were more like Uma Thurman. She's hot.
Also, if my Aunt Sharon had balls, she'd be my Uncle Ted.
Posted by: angryclown at November 16, 2005 08:03 AMAnd if that post were 1,200 pages longer, mused on winter, and made any sense, it'd be "War And Peace".
Defense was one of the issues that initially disgusted *me* with the Democrats, back when I was one. More Scoop Jacksons and Sam Nunns and Joe, er, Liebermen would certainly make the Dems seem less...what's the world I'm looking for...trivial? Juvenile? Invincibly stupid? On defense, anyway.
Posted by: mitch at November 16, 2005 08:12 AMAlso if Bush had balls he'd be Reagan.
Posted by: angryclown at November 16, 2005 08:24 AMAnd if genghis khan ("Jingiss Con", in Boston, apparently) had cojones and was REALLY impatient with the niggling vexations of the little people, he'd be me right now.
Posted by: mitch at November 16, 2005 08:39 AMAnd hey, Clown - to what do I owe the attention? T5C isn't giving you enough raw meat anymore?
Posted by: mitch at November 16, 2005 08:43 AMThe Clown stops by to read a thoughtful analysis of the day's events, natch. But if the blogmeister wishes to preserve an artificially high ratio of amens to niggles, Clown will simply lurk.
Posted by: angryclown at November 16, 2005 09:08 AMNiggle away; this is no echo chamber. Just curious.
