Dear KQRS

To: KQRS Radio
From: Mitch Berg
Re: Soul-crushing tedium

In regard to Brad Blanks, celebrity stalker/interviewer, please file under "Too Boring To Measure".

I actually find myself flipping over to the Patriot to listen to their commercials when Blanks is on.

Your prompt attention will be appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't listened to KQ for twenty years. Are they still playing Proud Mary? Tom Barnards is a repulsive human being.

Go do some cheesy voiceovers for more beer commercials, please. uuughhhhaaa.... that cold, crisp, tasssste.....

I find Barnard tedious, self-congratulatory, smug, and dull... on that, I think we can all agree.. They play the same 100 songs every week. You'd think Prokel Harem's only song was Whiter Shade of Pale.

On a "rib Mitch" note, Mitch, let's be fully honest, you'd listen to the Patriot anyway.. it is your station of choice.

The best thing I ever heard on the KQ morning show when I used to listen to them (1996) got chased off by PC whiners. A character called Tok. He was so fricking funny. I remember one time, he interviewed Scott Baio (and it was very early California time and Scott was still half asleep). Whoever was doing Tok was all over the roadmap and you could hear Scott just thinking to himself, "Who the *F###* IS this guy?!!?!??"

I have always hated the Chucker, Tok, and all of the other spoof interviewers. It's a really quick way to get me to switch the channel.

I know everyone hates celebrities, but these "interviews" are so stupid. I guess I just don't have the class envy/high school jock mentality of the average KQ Listener.

I am continually amazed at the seemingly never-ending popularity of KQ. How many times can you hear "Magic Carpet Ride" or those horrible Bob Seeger "classics" anyway? My personal ninth circle of hell would be being forced to listen to "Hollywood Nights" "Her Strut" "Like A Rock" "Turn the Page" "Night Moves" and "Against The Wind" over and over again without end. Which is not all that far off from what KQ does.

Keep it on KQ man, I've only heard "Smokin'" 82, 345 times so far and I really need to hear it again.

I used to listen to KQ when I was in high school and I got bored with their lame classic rock rotation in a matter of months. Yet there are people who have been listening to it non-stop for THIRTY FREAKIN' YEARS!

Did I mention how much I detest Bob Seeger?

I was pretty sure the RS in KQRS stood for Rolling Stones or Rod Stewart, interchangebly.
I don't know if any of you were around in the late sixties/early seventies (at the birth of FM) but the station was phenominally good. They played whole album sides and Left coast hippie drug music. Like the Cities 97 used to be good until they decided to become KQ Jr.

Posted by: Kermit at October 28, 2005 11:27 AM

I still have a soft spot for KQ, even though I rarely listen to the station.

Keep in mind, they keep playing "Turn the Page" and all of the other tried and true songs because *someone* is listening and keeps on listening.

KQ is the new 'CCO. The new old neighbor.

I mean, I like hearing REM's "The One I Love", but I would like to hear one or two other tracks now and again. ;)

C'mon Mitch, couldn't you have waited until next 92sday to bring this up?

You're ruining what's left of Rocktober.

I'd like to propose that for every non-political thread, someone has to find a way for PB to turn it political, like in the pizza thread.

Frankly, I'm stumped on this one, however.

Bill,
Maybe he could take the track a friend of mine once used:

The only black musicians that KQ plays are dead black musicians.

(I am at a loss as to why he thought any music station would have to have musical quotas or why he didn't consider the overwhelming number of black artists on the R&B, Hip-Hop, Pop, Big Band, or Disco stations years earlier.)

Viva la Pizza Policy Thread

Bill,

My comment was hardly political, it was a statement that Mitch was being disingenuous, asserting that he'd switch over to the station he was already listening to is hardly news.. I made no comments about the Patriot's views.

Beyond that, it was intended as ribbing..aka take it for what it was worth.. as a "who are you kidding" comment. Whether Mitch was attempting to decieve anyone, including KQRS, who cares really.

While that may be true (and there's really no reason to think otherwise), it's clearly not as fun, PB.

Viva la Pizza Thread. ;)

PB,

While you're right in a sense - I happily listen to most of the Patriot's programming, as between 5AM and 8PM on weekdays and 9AM-3PM Saturdays it has the best radio in the Twin Cities - I was speaking specifically of the commercials; I linked to a post by my co-host Elder lampooning the pure awfulness of so many spots running on the Patriot.

And I think that KQRS's program director has too much liking for Tom Petty.

Posted by: Loren at October 31, 2005 10:01 AM

There's no such thing as too much Tom Petty.

Posted by: mitch at October 31, 2005 10:49 PM

I know the program director of KQRS, but I doubt he's a die-hart Petty fan... maybe he likes him as much as anyone does.

Posted by: Badda-Blogger at November 1, 2005 03:11 PM

To all the detractors of KQRS, I believe "The Chucker" would reply to all of you with a ...."We may have to start this one all over"....! (HA HA HA HA...ad infinitum)

KQ
Yeah I hate the music but I've found that if I listen to the podcast its just great. No crappy songs I've heard 5 million times. And no comercials! It helps me get my "Q" on.
