Post-Election Wrapup

Michael Yon on the election.

He met some Minnesota National Guards:

We stopped at another station, and met Minnesota National Guard (now the 720th MPs) soldiers. Captain Aaron Krenz said their responsibilities included the Karrada and Mada-an districts, and 119 polling sites. All was quiet, but unlike in Sadr City where the people had made long lines before the polls opened, in these polling sites, he said, many people waited until the afternoon.

The Minnesota National Guardsmen, who might have been in pitched combat if this were January, were lounging about in lawn chairs, wearing full kit, ready to fight if the Iraqis needed help. But no calls were coming. Apparently the only help anyone needed was for lunch delivery. I later heard people saying the Iraqis didn’t want anyone except Iraqis coming near the polling sites; they wanted to show this was by Iraqis for Iraqis. It was their party.

Read the whole fascinating, encouraging thing.

It's a decent antidote to all the "Woot woot! 2000th death!" celebrations in the fantasy-based media.

Good to see things have been quiet for our guardsmen.

"Celebrations", Mitch?

The opportunists love a 'joyless' celebration, Bill.

You're redefining dark, badda-blogger.

Show me, with links, references and quotations, someone who is truly happy with 2,000 American deaths and who is representative of the majority of the people who attend such rallys (meaning: no strawmen; someone considered "mainstream" within the protest community).

Bill,

I doubt you'll see any expressions of overt "joy" from any *mainstream* democrats.

I think that behind the vigils and the tacked-on solemnity, very significant elements in the MoveOn/Kos/DU/Dem.com crowd are going "wOOt w00t, another black eye for the Administration!"

You *think*?

Again, proof, please.

Posted by: Bill Haverberg at October 26, 2005 10:46 AM

Bill,
I'll grant you that's dark, but it hardly redefines it. I said 'joyless' celebration. No one is going to be happy, as you said. (At least not in public.) But, as I stated quite clearly, they are *opportunists*. You know what I mean.

I'm fairly confident those opportunists are fairly obvious to folks like you and me, but it seems as if the media and many far-left moonbats jump on the bandwagon when it comes to using the deathtoll.

(For Christ's sake, it's a *war*!)

Just you wait until the number of dead American soldiers reachs the number of citizens killed on 9-11. Mark my words.

Perhaps there was another reason the Iraqis didn’t want anyone except Iraqis coming near the polling sites;

"What's hard here, however, is we still do not know the definitive results. It was supposed to be out in a couple of days, but there are some irregularities and I can tell you right now I witnessed them. When we went into the polling places--and it was interesting, the first polling place wouldn't let cameras in. The second one was, `Come on in, come on in.' I thought, `This'll change under democracy. We'll come back in four years. This'll never happen again.' We were behind the voting booth. My cameraman was back there and there was a man who took seven ballots, at least, because we have it on camera and marked yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes..."

My mistake, I must have missed the limbo contest, punch bowls, and gayly painted faces in appropriately big Democratic colors. And it also looks like I missed out on the "woot woot! 2000 deaths!" [Mitch's exact words] racous chanting, party balloons, and confetti.

You're going to see the same kinds of expressions at a pro-life or an anti-tax ralley. Does that mean the participants are celebrating abortions or high taxes, which is what Mitch implied on the anti-war protestors with the "woot woot! 2000 deaths!" remark? Or is it more likely people are taking comfort from shared solidarity?

So, I'm still looking for some sign that protestors are happy with the deaths of 2000 American servicemen. You know, something like "Woot! Woot! 2000 deaths! Yeeeeaaaahhhh!!!".
