I'm Not Sure...

...what astounds me more; the story that the feds never delivered $100,000,000 worth of ice intended to help out Katrina victims...:

Ninety-one thousand tons of ice cubes, that is, intended to cool food, medicine and sweltering victims of the storm. It would cost taxpayers more than $100 million, and most of it would never be delivered.
...or that it's possible to spend a tenth of a billion dollars on ice in the first place.

That comes to just short of $1,100 a ton, 55 cents a pound.

Gah! Friggin' government. I'm guessing if they'd just given the contract to Crystal or Sparkle or one of the other ice manufacturers, they could have had the stuff actually delivered, and at a lower cost. But GOD FORBID they actually just let private industry respond to these problems.

The government is a tool, not an entity unto itself. It is used by those in power to accomplish what they desire, whether that be $500 hammers, $1100 a ton ice, no bid contracts, the needless construction of the B1, F-16, F-18, or a myriad of other "pork", just blaming the "government" is something akin to blaming the fever, it's our sickenss in electing officials who seek through patronage to be returned to office. It's further our sickness that as long as our taxes our low, we pay no attention.
