You Were Warned

The City Pages' Steve Perry carps about the Department of Homeland Security, among his usual topics.

Which brings up the question; "who warned you that centralizing all national security in one federal uberagency was a stupid idea?"

Why, we conservatives did, of course.

And mark my words - we warned you that the 9/11 commission's centralization of intelligence under another level of bureaucracy was a stupid idea, too.

Hope that doesn't come back to haunt us, too.

Mitch,

I agree SOME conservatives balked at the idea of yet another large beaurocracy. Of course, so did some (many) liberals.

The reality is that conservative leadership has lead to higher debts and larger government. Conservatives don't spend less when in power, they just spend differently, and usually less responsibly, because the liberals are usually too cowed (or able to be bought), to stop them from loading the pork on.

Which raises the question, what really is the aim of the "conservative" leadership? By actions, rather than words, the conclusion must be to funnel money to their favorite corporate welfare recipients.

The real question is, when will conservative rank and file finally get that they are foot-soldiers for the corporate elite, who have about as much interest in small government/fiscal restraint as a New Orleans whore?

You don't agree.. well consider this, during the past two conservative administrations (ok - I use the term losely), the conservative controlled houses of congress (notice I didn't say Republican - there were Democrats who eventually joined the dark side err Republican party - yet were Dems at the time) the deficit has increased by about 5.2 Billion. Reagan NEVER vetoed a spending bill, wonder why? Because they were all passed with his party and ideology voting in the majority. Bush has exploeded the government for personal/relationship gain. The bill comes due on your kids, I wonder what you'll say to them. "Gosh sorry kids, I know it sucks that we left you with an average bill of $25,000 and now the government doesn't have the capacity to cover it's bonds/obligations, but you know, I really NEEDED that Hummer."

Nice government.. or should I say, lack thereof.

Anarchy is not a goal, it's a consequence, and any idiot who really subscribes to the "government so small I take take it out and drown it" needs to consider places like Liberia or Congo or Iraq (now).

Government is the collective intent of the people to agree and to set forth both in substance and in law, the means to ensure peaceful commerce. All of you who believe government is the root of evil, remember, it's first a tool, and second, when your house is on fire, turn on your hose (right after you build your road, and leech the lead/arsenic/mercury out of your water).
