Family Guy - Semi-original parody of traditional family shows. Clever, funny, crisply-written, wonderfully-voiced (who cares about the animation?), skewers everyone. Consistantly hilarious.
American Dad - Hackneyed parody. Dull-witted, self-consciously shocking rather than funny, cliche-ridden, voices all suck, skewers conservatives consistently. Consistently dull.

MacFarlane, not McFarlane.
I haven't seen his new show yet, but I think I've had enough of his sensibility; the Family Guy DVDs get way too much play in our house.
TRIVIA: Seth was supposed to be on one of the flights that hit the World Trade Center, but his agent gave him the wrong departure time.
Posted by: Ernst Stavro Blofeld at September 14, 2005 09:21 AMWhen Family Guy first came out, I was not a fan. I thought it was too over the top and trying too hard to shock merely for the sake of shocking. Over the years, I've come to appreciate it more, especially Stewie and Brian. I still don't find Peter all that funny, but it's a decent show.
I watched about five minutes of American Dad before bailing. It's terrible.
Posted by: the elder at September 14, 2005 10:20 AMSprint PCS has a ringer with Stewie's voice saying "Damn you, woman!". I've noticed many of my male co-workers have it as the ringer for their spousal units....

American Dad, "like jam spread over too much bread".
I've loved Family Guy since I first saw it. More topical and even more bizzare than South Park and less scatological ( no deified dancing feces ).
I saw nothing in American Dad I couldn't have picked up by perusing DU on a light day. I don't call that entertainment. It makes me remember Major Dad fondly.
Posted by: aodhan at September 14, 2005 05:18 PMAmerican Dad is a disaster, and I've yet to read a good review of it - even from the EW/Rolling Stone types. It's a wannabe Family Guy, right down to the talking pet with the hots for the wife.
Family Guy is still hilarious, and I'm lookin forward to the Direct-to-video movie. However, since it returned to FOX, it's been so self-absorbed and self-aware that it lost its charm. The new gag seems to be to take an unfunny joke and stretch it out for a good minute or two before moving on. It just isn't funny. It took the Simpsons 10-13 years to get as stale as its been recently, but Family Guy took just a few years.
Posted by: Jerry Leigh at September 15, 2005 01:52 AMThe first three seasons of FG had some of the best animated comedy ever. This new season is only so-so - I think we have the Chapelle Effect in action - once something that's designed as a cult show really takes off, the pressure starts rising on the creative staff and the show suffers.
American Dad isn't all that good. It has its moments, but it probably won't last. Karl Rove as a demon, gee, how bloody original...
And yes, MacFarlane was supposed to have been on the flight that hit the North Tower (IIRC)...
Posted by: Jay Reding at September 15, 2005 08:09 AMFamily guy is by far my fave show of all time.. American Dad has its merits though too.. i dont agree with everyone who says it is not funny. I think it is well written and the humour can only be realised by those who understand the politics in this day and age. Family guy is definately still much better, but I cant say that American Dad is a crappy show.. It highlights the issues that most shows wont, and makes it funny too.. so thats a bonus.

Posted by: at July 1, 2006 06:52 PMI rather like American Dad. Yes, Family Guy probably appeals on more levels and yes, there is some replication between the two, but I laugh just as hard at the Smiths as I do at the Griffins. One thing's for sure, the American Dad theme song doesn't piss me off as much when it gets stuck in my head.
