What Worships In Vegas...

Sisyphus at Nihilist In Golf Pants is in Vegas, and notes:

Many people don’t realize it, but Las Vegas does have Churches. In fact, the Catholic Cathedral of Las Vegas is located right on the strip (near the Wynn casino). Las Vegas churches often have impressive services thanks to the number of professional performers who are parishioners.
I did not know that.

I also did not know...:

For example, the cantor at the mass I attended had such an impressive voice that he must have a job singing in one of the shows.
...that the Catholic Church had cantors.
Also, I understand that the Unitarian Service contains an excellent topless revue.
Well, yeah.

Yes Catholic churches have cantors (I've been one for over ten years.) It's not as big a job as a Jewish cantor. You basically sing the Psalm verse between the first and second reading, sing the Alleluia verse before the Gospel reading, and generally help lead the singing during the rest of the Mass. And in many Catholic churches in the twin cities, the cantors are professionaly trained musicians (unlike me). I'm pretty sure they are at St. Olaf in Minneapolis, the Cathedral in St. Paul, and St. Agnes in St. Paul (where they get members of the Minnesota orchestra to play as well.)

I wish the local Unitarians had a topless revue. It would beat the heck out of the granola fueled sixties inspired America bashing tripe I'd get at the local one.
It stinks having the theology of a Unitarian and the politics of a Baptist :-)

Lol, Chriss.

Mitch, you must not get out much. Any of your Catholic friends ever get married? That was my introduction to the Catholic Cantor idea.

Speaking of Unitarian Baptists, my son was quizzing me the other day about ghosts and goblins - both my kids have been for months, for some reason. After once again assuring him that I don't believe in their existence, he said, "What about exorcisms?" I responded, "Well, that's kind of different, to me, since the church seems to believe there's something to them - I'm skeptical, but I'm withholding judgement."

"What church?"

"Well, the Catholics naturally, and I've also spoken with great men of our church who believe in it."

"Our church? The Roman Baptists?"

We're Episcopalians - that pretty much seemed to fit.

I've been lookin' for an excuse to turn Unitarian. Sadly, I don't have much use for Vegas, Elvis impersonators notwithstanding.

Unfortunately, you've also exposed my lack of any excuse for not volunteering at my Lutheran Church.

Whenever I hear of Unitarians I think of an old joke I heard once; the punchline was that instead of burning crosses in people's yards Unitarians burn question marks.

Las Vegas has 600 churches that service over 60 faiths and 298 schools with an additional 88 schools due to open by 2008. Just for the record and those who cannot imagine such resources available in Vegas.
