Pet Peeves

I don't have many pet peeves. I'm pretty much a live and let live kind of guy.

But there are a few things that always set my teeth on edge:

  • Misusing "Apropos" - So many people think "apropos" is a synonym for "Appropriate"; "I don't think getting drunk and walking into the board meeting wearing nothing but a teddy would be apropos". Bzzzt. It means "With regard do", as in "We need to do something apropos that drunk guy who walked into the board meeting wearing lingerie".
  • "Looser" as a noun - There's a wave of people - mostly on the left, it seems, although that may merely be because that's where I notice this ten times out of ten - that think that the adjective form of "to lose" somehow miraculously gains an extra "o": "He's such a looser". They're not referring to his bowels or morals, not that I can tell - so where does this come from?
  • Mark Wheat - My first radio boss, who made it a point to hire high school kids, said "kids go through three stages; first, you can't make 'em talk. Then they get verbal diarrhea, and you can't shut 'em up. Then, if you're lucky, they settle down to 'just right'". Mr. Wheat, the 89.3 The Current afternoon personality, seems to have settled at #2, talking on and on and on and on and on...
All for now.

"Looser" for "loser", "mostly on the left".

I wish that it were that easily categorized. I see the same thing all the time on the DBMList (Ancients miniatures wargaming). It's so prevalent that I think it may be more common than the correct spelling.

I think it is because it doesn't show up on a spelling check (a sadly misunderstood tool), and is a reasonable spelling in the absence of actual knowledge. (The 'o' in 'loser' is pronounced as if it were 'oo'.)

Ever notice how often "hypocrisy" or "hypocrite" are misspelled? Sometimes I want to correct people, but given my poor typing, and occasional errors, I'm afraid I would be accused of being a hippocrite.

Wheat does the 7pm-midnight shift, not the afternoon; you were thinking of Steve Seel or Mary Lucia, no? Also, you linked to a message board that's mostly complimentary towards Wheat..??

Doh. Had Wheat's shift wrong. No mistaking the accent.

Lucia's interviews are mercurial; I've heard good ones, I've heard ones that I couldn't wait to turn off.

One that turns my crank is the use of the word "verbiage". Verbiage is the overabundance or superfluity of words in a sentance. Most morons substitute it for the word, "language", or the actual words used in the sentance. Grrrr.

Next time you see a store (mis)use a decimal point in combination with a cent sign (apples .65c instead of 65c or $.65) offer them a penny and say "keep the change!" For some reason they don't think it's funny.
