Solved?

Deep Throat revealed?

A former FBI official claims he was "Deep Throat,'' the long-anonymous source who leaked secrets about President Nixon's Watergate coverup to The Washington Post, his family said today.

W. Mark Felt, 91, was second-in-command at the FBI in the early 1970s. His claim was revealed today by Vanity Fair magazine, and family members said they believe his account is true.

Doh. I had my money on Dwight Rabuse.

There goes Carl Woodward's big retirement bonus book...

I had the same thought: "Woodward has GOT to be fuming!"

What are you up to now, 5006 posts or something? I just learned to count, so you might need to go slow, here. Also, reading is a bit new for me.

Ever since I started reading things other than "Kos" and "Jesus General", my brain hurts. Kos, what am I supposed to do now?

Kos?

KOS?

Why aren't you chatting with me? Have I been cast out?

WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME, KOS?

Maybe IM isn't working...

Don’t you think that 30 years is long enough for Woodward and Bernstein to spend milking essentially the same story?

Perhaps the best response is a collective “yawn” as no one, save those who are obsessed with Nixon, really cares that much anymore.

Thorley,

I agree. For my purposes, deflating Woodward and Bernstein'd be the perfect end to one of the great boomer memes; let it die with a whimper.

Mr. Funky,

Keep reading. Your brain will get into shape eventually.

Yeah, Woodward refused to confirm, obviously frustrated that he lost out on a big exclusive once Felt passed away. But cooler heads prevailed, and the Washington Post has now confirmed Felt is Deep Throat. Case closed!

Nixon: Is he [W. Mark Felt] Catholic?

Haldeman: (unintelligible) Jewish.

President Nixon: Christ, put a Jew in there?

Haldeman: Well, that could explain it too.

From the Nixon tapes:

One thing that's definitely solved: Nixon and Halderman were a couple of world class douchebags.

I saw a Frontline documentary a few years back -- might have even been named "Who was Deep Throat," but I forget most of the details. I do remember that they put some clues together that pointed rather strongly to an FBI connection, so I was not surprised to find out that Deep Throat was a high ranking FBI official.

So the number 2 guy in the FBI doesn't get the job he thought he was entitled to, and he torches POTUS? That is not the stuff of heroes.

So, Makakilo, are you inferring [sic] that Nixon didn't deserve to go down? That he was framed or something? What is your point?

Posted by: Something Polish at June 1, 2005 09:21 AM

If I recall correctly, Nixon (and everyone else in DC) was scared to cross J. Edgar Hoover. After he died, Nixon ruffled FBI feathers by putting his own man in charge, bypassing Hoover's hand-picked successor. Note to future presidents: keep the FBI happy.
