Unaccountably...

...this bit of news slipped past me.

Governor Pawlenty signed the Minnesota Personal Protection Act into law on Tuesday. It went back into effect yesterday.

Take that, Maoists!

As soon as I get my tax refund, I'm in.

The training, if nothing else, gives a new appreciation of how hard it is to be an average cop, who has to make that split-second decision about whether there's reason to draw, or even fire, hundreds of times more often than we civilians ever will. Hopefully, we never will.

Many get the permit, and then never carry, or almost never carry a gun because they don't want to decide wrong one day. It probably makes it a little easier to carry if you're protecting someone else. But, just getting that permit, and not carrying, protects the Second Amendment. So, even they are protecting something.

"Maoists"?

Posted by: Jeff S. at May 26, 2005 11:40 AM

Actually Mitch misspelled that, it should be "Meowists" The cat-fancier lobby in Minnesota has campaigned hard and long against the CC law.

Posted by: billhedrick at May 26, 2005 01:57 PM

Meowists, hehe.

I just question the indignation of the right when some troll calls conservatives "brownshirts", yet it's ok (and funny!) to call opponenents with different points of view and values "Maoists".

Hell, I'm a liberal who agrees with a rational approach to CC legislation, but can understand why some might not share my view. I get just as turned off by lines of argument that involve brownshirts as Maoists. But go ahead, polarize and alienate all you like.

Jeff S.,

the "Maoists" crack was admittedly hyperbolic; the comic intent was also obvious to me (since "Maoist" implies a level of dogmatic ossification that is both over the edge and yet perfectly describes the likes of Wes Skoglund, at least on this issue), although perhaps only to me. No offense intended.

If the Shiu doesn't fit, don't wear it!

How many more bar bouncers can we expect to be gunned down by concealed-carry cowboys--like the one murdered in cold blood at Nye's? But I suppose you insecure little boys figure one innocent death a year is worth the price to be able to carry your little pistols around.

Posted by: Dump Bachmann at May 27, 2005 12:26 PM

Dump Bachman: Given that 100+ murders occur each year in MN, and that the Nye's incident is the first involving a CC permit holder *ever*, and weighed against an untold number of robberies/deaths/rapes prevented, what would you prefer?

Dumpster,

Ourada's permit had NOTHING to do with the shooting. He wasn't carrying his pistol when he was tossed. He apparently was driven home and dropped off; he brought his pistol back on his own (very drunk - itself illegal under the new, but not old, law).

There's speculation that Hennepin County erred in issuing his permit.

In two years, there has been one wrongful shooting. In that same two years, 200-odd people have been murdered by the rest of you. That's a 1/27,000 ratio for carry permit holders over two years (if you count the Nye's shooting which, again, was not remotedly related to concealed carry), versus a 1/25,000 for the population at large. Next year, it'll be 1/35,000 to 1/13,333. And so on.

Face it; the people who qualify for concealed carry permits are more trustworthy than the people who don't.
