Cop Killing In Saint Paul

Someone once called Saint Paul "fifteen small towns with one mayor".

And like a lot of small towns, the police in Saint Paul are generally well-regarded by most people, and it's a particular shock when something bad happens to them.

Sergeant Gerald Vick, a 15 year veteran of the force, was shot early this morning while on Vice squad duty. He was shot by a couple of men in an alley behind an East Side bar.

The shooters are still at large.

Updates in the extended entry.

UPDATE: The Strib says two suspects are in custody.

The shooting happened not far at all from the site of Saint Paul's last police shooting. In 1994, Officer Ron Ryan Jr. was shot in the parking lot of a nearby church, around half a mile west (as I recall) from last night's crime scene; later in the day, the suspect, Guy Harvey Baker, shot Officer Tim Jones and his police dog, Laser, near a fish shack a little east of the alley where Sgt. Vick was murdered.

UPDATE II: Vick was decorated for saving a young girl from a fire in 1991. Ironically, Ron Ryan had also received a commendation for helping save several children in a house fire.

UPDATE III: What Elder said.

""At least one suspect in the early morning shooting of an undercover St. Paul vice cop was in custody, and heavily armed officers looking for a second suspect consumed the city's east side in a massive air and ground search.

Sources with knowledge of the investigation wouldn't discuss details of the person who'd been taken into custody, but one source said he was "likely involved." ""

It's good for us to remember that being part of a police officer's family is no piece of cake either. It's not just the police officer that feels that daily stress. I thank Sergeant Vick's family for supporting him, so he could support us. I hope the honor he deserves from St. Paul can take away some of the pain for them.

the STRIB reports Both suspects, and several witnesses are in custody

""St. Paul police took two suspects into custody after a wide-ranging manhunt through the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood, where a vice officer working undercover was shot dead early this morning.

Six other people also were taken into custody Friday morning; police believe they may have been witnesses to the shooting or have knowledge of the case.

"We are not in a position to say that we are certain at this time that we have the suspects in custody," Police Chief John Harrington said around 9 a.m. "The investigation will continue." ""

I assume handguns were used. I wonder if the 2 gunmen had conceal/carry permits? Guess what...I don't think we'll find that out from any of the reporting.

The shooting is a tragedy. Too bad we don't allow "justice" to be served to the criminals behind this....they deserve a few million watts of that justice.

Posted by: Dave at May 6, 2005 10:18 AM

I'd like to know about permits, too. Does anybody know how we can find out if the two suspects named in the news story had been issued concealed carry permits? Is that public information? If not, who's got sources to look it up?
.

Posted by: nathan bissonette at May 6, 2005 02:07 PM

I rather doubt that they had permits. I heard on WCCO Radio that both have extensive criminal histories, which should preclude the issuance of a permit.

Posted by: Nick at May 6, 2005 02:41 PM

Wait...you mean these 2 scumbags had a gun...maybe without a PERMIT! Seems to me that the dimwits like Wes Skoglund want us to think that NOT issuing permits to law-abiding citizens will reduce the number of guns on the streets. Right?

Making the sheep even MORE defenseless only allows the wolves' teeth more deadly.

Its a shame these criminals don't get what they REALLY deserve.

Posted by: Dave at May 6, 2005 03:21 PM

Haven't we listened to the psycho-babble BS from the DFL for long enough? Every....single....year....we hear the crapola about "we need to spend more on prevention" to stop the criminals when they are kids. Well....we've been dumping money into that hole since these two criminals were crumb-crunchers.

Now...they are full-grown criminals. With criminal records a MILE long.

How many career criminals have to slaughter our brave police officers before we BUILD PRISONS and LOCK THESE SCUMBAGS UP! How much money do we have to waste on these "prevention" programs before we realize it doesn't help?

Posted by: Dave at May 6, 2005 03:38 PM

Dave -

It costs more than $20,000 per inmate per year. Clearly that is worth it to society for many criminals and the scum who shot Vick should never see the light of day again.

Could you please give some details as to how much money (programs, etc.) we are spending on prevention? Where would I find evidence that prevention programs doen't have any effect relative to the costs or with respect to the cost of incarceration? I don't really have a grasp on these aspects.

Thanks

Has anyone noticed that almost all of the leftwing media in the Twin Cities has refused to put photos of these murderous thugs?! Channel Five. Just another example of racial filtering in our "no one race has more criminals in the Twin Cities" wako media. Pathetic.

Maybe Mitch can contact these fools and ask them why these photos are missing. Along with the picture of the scum Best Steakhouse killer....

All our prayers are with this fine officer's family and co-officers. He lived by example.

It is hard to hear about the death of a brother. I was able to go on patrol in September 2001 with officers in Saint Paul. This city is my second home with teir friendly people. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of officer Vick and his co-officers in St. Paul Willi Fischer, K9-officer, Policedepartment Neuss, Germany

Herr Fischer,

Vielen Dank für dein comment (und entschüldigen Sie mir mein Grammar...). St. Paul ist auch mein zweite Heim. In unsere Polizei haben wir in St. Paul viel Stoltz.

I wanted to say that Gerald Vick was a friend and it saddens me that this "Joe" would post such a horible thing.

Jerry was not a hot shot cop, he spent personal hours with those of our city whi he arrested only hours ago. He tried to help them get better. He tried to get them help if he could. He saved many lives and extended his hand to everyone. Even the bad guys. He was not just a cop, he was a human and cared deeply. Beyond that he was a good friend and loved his family very much.

Yes Joe, he owuld forgive you for your words as you are simply without hope. Jerry would do all he could to extend you hope.

God bless you all.

In regard to the garbage posted by "Joe"...in spite of people like you, this man did a job that I'm certain you are not man enough to do.

God bless the Vick family at this horrible time...We thank you for allowing your hero to be ours.

Can't you remove a note like the one that was posted by Little "Joe" THREE times. His obscene vulgar language is enough to really show the true intelligence of the person writing the note!

Let me just tell you - Sgt. Gerald Vick - or to those of us who knew him - Jerry was one of the best guys you will ever meet. He was one of my husband's life long friends and was the complete opposite of everything that Little "Joe" posted. He was not a hot shot cop, but rather very humble, dedicated, sincere and he truly cared about his job and the people he was trying to protect. He won two medals of valor while serving on the SPPD - and they aren't something that just get awarded to anyone. He did more good on the force and on the streets of St. Paul than any of us will ever konw.

As you have seen by many of the news stories on him since his murder - he saved many lives in his 16 years of service. He was not out to just lock up criminals and put them away, but to get help for those he could to turn them away from a life of crime and suffering.

While he was always a police officer, he was also a "best" friend to many, wonderful husband, father... and a HERO in all of our eyes.

L,

I understand the affect "Joe"'s comments must have on you. I find them ugly and moronic, as well.

I didn't see the original comments. I'll trim a few of them.

But I'm going to leave one up. This blog exists, in part, to let the world see what sort of demi-human filth the rest of us are up against.

"Joe" is exhibit A.
