Whew

Well, I have a computer working at home again.

Sort of.

Computers are like this for me; every year or two, I have to do some major maintenance or repair on one computer or another, during which I become quite the expert.

Then for the next year or two, things run hunky-dory, and I forget everything I'd taught myself in my last bout of enforced geekdom.

Anyway, posting should be more or less normal now. I think.

Maybe it's due to my ADD, but computers hate me. Every computer I've used for any length of time starts running so slowly that people looking over my shoulder assume it's a manufacturing error. Little do they know that I've got up to 10 windows open behind the window they're watching. Hee! But even when that's not the case, my computers run slower than others'.

Welcome to the world of Windows, Mitch. It's not uncommon for Windows systems to slow down even in well maintained configurations if you do things like install/uninstall programs and the like. You can keep them acceptable for years, but you have to make sure that you don't change the Windows system much. That, and you have to avoid putting all the little "helper" apps that every manufacturer seems to think you want and need.

As a general rule I don't have problems with my laptop, but I don't do much to it or allow much to be done to it (the only time the kids get on it is to watch DVDs on trips). But the computers the kids and the wife have access to need regular reinstallation as a way to clean off all the junk that accumulates. Norton Ghost is my favorite method of rolling back the system to a stable, clean, and fast state. I put all the "user" stuff in one partition and the system and programs in another and wipe XP periodically and reinstall.
