Ludwig Bemelmans

Red notes that today is Ludwig Bemelmans' birthday.

Bemelmans is the author of the "Madeline" series of childrens' books. My kids both loved Madeline, both the books and the original cartoon featuring Christopher Lloyd's voice-over. My daughter used to make me sing the theme song over...

...and over...

...and over again, when she was a toddler, singing along with gusto when we got to the words she knew.

Red's got a bunch of cool biographical stuff on Bemelmans, too.

It's funny, Mitch - my dad used to read us those books too (even though we knew them by heart) - and even now, when I read them - I hear them in my dad's voice. It's pretty cool.

My favorite childhood books were “The Adventures of the Great Brain” – the story of a twelve year old con artist living in 1880’s Advenville, Utah as told from the perspective of his younger brother as written by John D. Fitzgerald.

I also have a warm spot in my heart for the Tom Swift, Boy Genius; the Mad Scientists’ Club, Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, Encyclopedia Brown (although Jay Russel’s recent take was somewhat . . . disturbing), and pretty much anything by Judy Blume particularly the “Fudge” series.

Mitch, on the voice-over for the Madeline videos, did you mean to write Christopher Plummer? He was, of course, the romantic lead (Captain Von Trapp)in the Sound of Music with Julie Andrews. He also starred in Hanover Street with Harrison Ford and the lovely Leslie-Anne Down, among many other accomplishments including a stint as Sherlock Holmes.

Doh!

Yes. Plummer.
