I Got To Thinking

Which is always dangerous.

Ten years ago, I bought my first decent computer - a Pentium 100 with 32MB of RAM and a 1GB hard drive. It cost $2,000, without the monitor. At about that time, I also bought my first-ever foil two-pack of pain-killer from a convenience store. It cost $1.50.

Over the weekend, I was pricing some new desktop boxes at GNS. Athlon 2.8G chips, 256MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive for around $550.

I also bought a two-pill foil pack of Aleve this morning. Again, $1,50.

And I got to thinking; if over the counter pain relievers had followed the same technology to price curve that the Personal Computer has, my $1.50 would have gotten me 46 tablets of painkiller - or, alternately, that same two-pack would cost nine cents.

Just saying.

Yeah, I work in the industry and it still amazes me how much prices have dropped and power has soared. But no matter how much we hardware types do, the software types manage to find new ways to waste it.

BTW, GNS is pretty good. I like their selection and the techs seemed on balance pretty good, although the one I had for my second trip was much better than the one on my first. I had to make two trips to get a motherboard they sold me taken back because of a bad sound chip on the MB. These things happen, but the second tech did a better job of debugging and then swapping the board (I already knew the chip was bad, but it took a while to convince them). Overall, I'd go there again for sure.
