Skates In Hell

Babelogue notes that the Strib is on the brink of hiring a conservative columnist.

The field is apparently down to local Republican/center-right pundits-at-large Katherine Kersten and Sarah Janecek.

Says the City Pages piece:

Is the move a concession to all the paper's right-wing critics, who have been especially noisy in recent months? One Strib staffer who spoke on condition of anonymity doubts that was much of a factor: "I think it's market-driven. Whether it's Gyllenhaal, California, or Moyer [behind the move], I think they're responding to a feeling that we're missing out in the suburban areas because we don't connect there politically."
Where "don't connect" equals "are perceived as actively hostile".

I'm rooting for Sarah.

There is no word on when an announcement will be made.

UPDATE: King informs me that Kersten is no long with the Center. I changed the story accordingly.

Mitch, Kathy is no longer at CAmExp. She's a damn good writer, btw, and I think the STrib would be well served by either columnist. Sad part is, Kathy used to write for them and they ran her off.

This may shock you, Mitch, but I'm rooting for Janecek, too. She's a good writer, and frankly, a major daily should have both conservatives and liberals on staff as editorialists.

I won't agree with Janecek much, but so what? She should be there.

(Kersten doesn't do much for me, personally. She's a talking-point spewer. Janecek is smarter more interesting.)

Now, if we can find a way to get rid of Syl Jones, a man who's done more damage to the cause of racial equality in the Twin Cities than any other person alive....

I'm rooting for my fellow Domer, Katherine. I wonder whether this is more of a competitive response to the PP recent hirings on the editorial page then a concern about not playing well in the suburbs.

Katherine Kersten wrote several guest op-eds a while back. Stirred up the moonbats to no end; on some days 2 out of 3 letters to the editor and half the op-ed page were ripping on her. Ad-hominem attacks of the worst kind.

I doubt she would want to subject herself to level of personal abuse again.
