Good News for Bachmann and Yecke

Jeff Fecke has good news for GOP District Six candidates Michele Bachmann and Cheri Pierson Yecke:

Per Flash. My recommendation to Patty Wetterling: don't. Run again in the 6th, where you'll be facing either archconservative Cheri Pierson Yecke or arch-archconservative Michele Bachmann. You've got a great shot of not only beating, but destroying those candidates (even in a lean-right district like the 6th).
Now, Jeff's a fine guy, but he's the guy who picked Kerry to win (except for the time when he wrote him off for the nomination, which in effect sealed Howard Dean and Wes Clark's fates), but only after declaring Wesley Clark would win, which he had to do because his first choice, after picking someone else (Mad How? Edwards? I forget, and don't want to look), tanked.

Congrats Ms. Pierson Yecke. Or Bachmann.

What about Phil Krinkie?

Or Jim Knoblach.

Oh, sure, Krinkie and Knoblauch. Yeah, everyone's fired up about them.

No, it's Bachmann's endorsement to lose, IMHO. As for the general, the fact that Bachmann is far-right is going to be an issue, especially if she's facing Wetterling, who pulled over 40% against an incumbent (one of, I think, four challengers to do that nationwide). Yes, the 6th is lean-right--and I may be overstating things to say Wetterling could "destroy" Bachmann--but I think she could win.

Hey, I've called things right before. I called '94 right. I called '96 right. (I even called Pat Buchanan's win in NH that year.) I called '98 right...in '96.

2004 was a bad year for predictions. But I think 2006 I'm going to do better.

(My early line: Gov: Pawlenty over Hatch 52-47-1; Sen: Klobuchar over Kennedy 54-44-2; 6th: Wetterling over Bachmann 51-49. But I could be wrong.)

Oh, and for the record, I never said Wesley Clark would win. Indeed, when I endorsed him, I took great pains to note it was the kiss of death.

Indeed, in all the many varied major primaries I've seen, only once has my preferred non-incumbent candidate garnered the party's nomination: Paul Wellstone, 1990. (When I was 16 I was quite a bit more liberal than I am today.) I expect that will change in 2006, as I think it's 50/50 that Mike Hatch will be the only Democrat running, but if Dean Johnson seeks the endorsement I may just run the string out another two years, at least.

(I did say Kerry had no shot at the nomination. In hindsight, it might have been better had I been right.)
