NARN Post: Blowing No Smoke

Ryan Pacyga, attorney for Minnesotans Against Smoking Bans, has posted an article at the Northern Alliance Radio Network site.

MASB is going to be trying to file a restraining order against the various municipal smoking bans in the near future.

I am not a smoker, I have asthsma and I HATE the smell of cigarette smoke. However, I think that the idea of a statewide smoking ban is silly, if nothing else for the fact that in many parts of the state it would not be enforceable. Being from Northern Minnesota (and Mitch, you being from rural North Dakota can appreciate this as well I'm sure), there are a whole slew of tiny bars and cafes in small towns and out of the way villages all over the place. So, if someone lights up a smoke at the Melrude Pub (in rural St. Louis county) or the bar in Lawler, MN (rural Aitkin county),that law enforcement is expected to drive 45 minutes to hand out a ticket ? Good luck getting the county mounties to drive out for that one (now if it causes a knock-down, drag-out fight...).
Again, passing unenforceable legislation, or legislation subject to "selective enforcement", is bad policy, and our resoucres could be better spent elsewhere. Given a choice between cracking down on smokers and going after violent criminals and sex offenders, I'll choose the latter two every time.

HAVANA (AP) — Photographs of Fidel Castro standing and talking on the phone were published Sunday in Cuba's state-run media, a day after the ailing leader appeared in a video to dispel rumors he was on his deathbed.

The Communist Youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde dedicated its front page to the Cuban president, printing a blown-up picture of a pensive Castro with the title "Always fighting for something, and fighting with optimism!"
