Real Diversity

Erin O'Connor writes about the formation of a Black Republicans Club at the U of Pennsylvania:

. If one believes that campuses should be places where minority groups can express themselves freely, in all their wide cultural variety, then Penn's Black Republicans club must be a good thing. If one believes that campuses should be places where a variety of political viewpoints are represented, and where, as a consequence, those viewpoints are subjected to the bracing test of vigorous public debate, then Penn's Black Republicans club must be a good thing.
Worth a read.

UPDATE: U Penn and Penn State are not the same thing. Who knew? Thanks to Dave in Pgh, the commenter who corrected me...

Just a quick correction -- this story concerns the University of Pennsylvania, an ivy league school near Philadelphia. The name is customarily shortened to Penn, which confuses out-of-staters who are more familiar with Pennsylvania State University, or Penn State, located almost in the exact center of the state (a.k.a. the "Republican T"), far removed from any urban center. This story is refreshing news from a blue-zone institution like Penn.

Penn State had its own problems last year. The College Republicans' president, a blooming idiot, hosted or attended a party where people dressed in KKK robes and blackface. He posted photos of it on his web site. The Black Caucus and the Equity office found out, setting back the cause by about 50 years. A Black Republican organization at Penn State would be especially good news right now.

Mitch,

This mistake could have been easily avoided if you had been a a fan of college football (or more precisely, of the college football that serves as the de facto minor league of the NFL). Penn State has a reputation (tarnished in the last few years) of having a Big Power Football Program, while the question about Penn might be "Do they _have_ a football team?"

Anyway, it's no biggie, though I'm glad to see that those hours spent reading the Sporting News are not entirely wasted.

"This mistake could have been easily avoided if you had been a a fan of college football"

It could also have been avoided if I had more time to date starlets who had had flings with football players - but that, like sports fandom, has had to take a back seat to the rest of life.

I did actually know the difference, at one point; that point was, unfortunately, during Reagan's first term.
