Snow Thing Like Snow

We're still waiting on snow here in the Twin Cities.

Last night, as we were getting ready to go on teh air for our Hewitt fill-in, we were talking down the circuit with Hugh's producer, Generallissimo Duane in LA.

Duane, who'd seem to be a lifelong Los Angeles resident, repeated something I've heard from Californians my whole life:

The great thing about Southern California is that you're a two hour drive from any kind of weather you want.
I hear this, and just shake my head. How depressing.

Granted, I'm a winter person. To me, driving to get to snow is like paying for sex; it's unnatural, and just a tad immoral.

But, again, I love winter. Real winters, mind you - the ones we have here in Minnesota are kind of wussy. In 19 winters in MN, I haven't found a winter that even caught my attention, after growing up in North Dakota.

No, really.

While Minnesota has a well-deserved reputation for some stunningly cold winter weather (not yet in evidence this season), the really isn't that much snow. Alas, driving somewhere to get it snow--e.g., da U.P., eh (e.g., http://www.bigpowderhorn.net/) may actually be necessary.

Minnesota's got a Great Lake (i.e., snowmaker), but it's not in the place to do "snow good," at least for the Twin Cities.

Minnesota winters are snowier than North Dakota, but warmer and less windy.

Ergo, "Wussy".

As a recovering Californian from the SF area, I have to say that the worst part about SoCal is that after driving for four hours, you're still in SoCal.

Moving to Washington ( now I'm a Calingtonian ) has been an eye opener for me. There really /are/ more than two seasons. Trees change color! And it's pretty!

Black ice was one of those less pleasant discoveries.

I grew up just south of Superior, WI. We caught the edge of the "snow belt" but we didn't get the lake effect warming, so we usually had at least two feet of snow on the ground by January AND minus-teens highs throughout that month. Since moving to The Cities, the winters have been wimpy.

My wife is from Virginia, MN. The Range. It wasn't quite as snowy, but it's often colder than Nome, Alaska.

Even in northern Minnesota we haven't had a real winter since oh maybe 1977-was a good one.Three generations of us here, but many lived other places alot.Me northern Iowa ,dad some too ,we both agreed nothing like wind & no trees to make a nasty winter so I have to believe North Dakota is worse.
