I have a terrible habit - I drive with the needle at or below empty waaaay too long. Too much to do to bother with putting gas in, doncha know.
I was driving up Snelling Avenue this morning after dropping my daughter off to school, doing about 45 mph, mentally calculating how far below "E" my needle was, wondering if I had time to stop for coffee before I got gas, when I saw the tachometer dip, cough, and then slide down to "0 RPM". That answered that question.
Now, I honestly can say I haven't run out of gas in a car in almost 20 years. But I can't say that I've ever run out of gas half a block from a gas station and with enough momentum to actually get me to the gas pump in style.
With a start like that, how can the day go wrong?
Oh, I shouldn't have asked that, should I?

What??
You don't by coffee at the same place you buy gas? I didn't realize you were so hoidy-toidy!!
Posted by: rick at October 29, 2004 08:12 AMMine stopped while waiting for the car ahead to finish filling up.

Dang skippy I am - about coffee and beer, anyway. I didn't really start drinking beer seriously until I went to Europe, and I didn't start drinking coffee until I lived across from a Dunn Brothers. To this day, I figure - if I'm going to drink either one, I might as well enjoy them. So yep, I drink the hoidy-toidy coffee, and the yuppie import and microbrew beer. And I'm dang proud of it.
Posted by: mitch at October 29, 2004 09:31 AMMitch, what you experienced is the grandslam home-run, hole-in-one to procrastinators world-wide.
Congratulations and where can I pick up my cigar?
Posted by: swiftee at October 29, 2004 11:04 AMThe shocking news of The Shot's coffee namby-pambiness and failure to fuel is breathtaking. How many mochas does it cost to fix a drain?? Is bottled water next??
Repent.

Hate to break your bubble, but, if you drive an older car (like most of us working guys) then letting the tank run dry is a big NO-NO. Why? Well besides containing your fuel, the gas tank (after literally hundreds of fill ups) will acuumulate a lot of extraneous material, ie, corrosion products, dirt, grit, contaminants in fuel, etc, and this debris will settle to bottom of tank (being heavier than gas) - normally this is probabally manageable - but when your run tank dry this "junk" usually gets sucked up into the fuel system and can reek havoc on fuel filters, fuel pump, carbs, injectors, etc.
So I think your good "day" may be short lived when you car starts to run poorly, stutters & conks out on the highway during rush hour due to a plugged fuel filter or worst.
BTW - some prevent defense - change out the fuel filter ASAP & never runher dry!
