Not everyone likes Halloween. Gotta confess, it's not my favorite holiday, either.
But the kids have fun, right?
But a school district in Washington has canceled Halloween - because it bothers wiccans:
There will be no dressing up and no tricking for treats in the Puyallup school district this year. They've decided to enforce a rule that's been on the books for a few years. No Halloween celebrations will be allowed because it is offensive to witches.Posted by Mitch at October 29, 2004 04:59 AM | TrackBack
Actually Mitch, that's not the whole story. No wiccans in that county requested that the school board halt Halloween festivities; the school board did it on their own initiative. Some wiccans are actually protesting the move becaues they feel like they're being scapegoated by the board's conservative push to step on the celebration for its own sake.
Posted by: Joshua at October 29, 2004 09:58 AMI never meant to imply that Wiccans were behind the move, and if I had, I'd have looked dumb, since the story states that part of the story fairly clearly.
Posted by: mitch at October 29, 2004 10:08 AMI, for one, think banning images of witches at schools is a great idea. I also think we should ban stereotypical images of one-eyed, green-faced zombie people, lest we hurt the feelings of real one-eyed, green-faced zombie people, a diverse group whose beliefs, experiences and culture cannot be accurately portrayed -- and indeed can only be mocked and misunderstood -- by children wearing one-eyed, green-faced zombie people costumes to school.

Gimme a break.
Actually, it's refreshing to see a school board banning Halloween because it's offensive to Wiccans, as opposed to a school board banning Halloween because it's offensive to conservative Christians.
Look around at your friendly neighborhood school, folks. Dollars to donuts, they're celebrating "Harvest Festival" today. They ain't doing it for the Wiccans.

The phlox they're not. If it weren't for the pagan harvest festival tradition, there'd be no Halloween, ergo no holiday at all.
