They Get Paid For This: Part IV

Oliver Willis is back in the seat of honor!

On Monday, in a piece entitled "Bush's Base Speaks Out - (Bush's Base!, mind you!), Willis writes:

Click here to watch a video of adulterer/pervert/professional Christian Jimmy Swaggart share his compassionate conservative views on homosexuality and why George W. Bush is the man for him:
News flash - Jimmy Swaggart is an embarassment!

... I've never seen a man in my life I wanted to marry. And I'm gonna be blunt and plain; if one ever looks at me like that, I'm gonna kill him and tell God he died."

Wow. That Swaggart. Just like every Republican, isn't he?

Yes, nothing like the Taliban at all.
That's right.

Swaggart sent forth mobs to stone gays to death. Swaggart executed women who weren't dressed right, and kept girls home from school. Terrorists issued forth from Jimmy Swaggart's fiefdom to immolate innocent people by the thousand.

No difference at all!

Oliver Willis gets paid for this by Media Matters".

Joe Klein has nothing to do with Media Matters for America. Get your facts right when you smear people, geez.

Where's the "smear?" I'm quoting *you*. Are your own words a "smear" when you're quoted writing them?

As to fact-checking - your blog is a frenzy of factual faux pas. As I'll be pointing out in the next few days.

Whatchutalkinabout, Willis?

How about responding to the actual issue, here: Your hyperbole discredits you. Its contributed to the ever-lamer nature of your blog, which I also used to enjoy, and now think is just...

...dumb?

Too much kryptonite, Ollie?

Just out of curiosity, is there any evidence to show that Jimmy Swaggert is either a Republican or a Bush supporter? I seem to recall that many on the Left used to love to throw Fred Phelps of “G-d hates f**s” infamy in the faces of Republicans. . . until it turned out he was a Democrat.

Thorley that's a good question. While I've always assumed Swaggart was GOP, I'm not positive.

Oliver, Mitch brings up an interesting point. You call it a "smear" - but he's just quoting you. Is the quote inaccurate? It seemed word-for-word to me. So where's the smear? Do you not stand by what you said?

That's such a part of Democrat communication these days. "Calling attention to the objective record" is "smearing", if it doesn't make Dems look good. It's dishonest, which was, I think, Mitch's point.

Swaggart - Howard Dean???

I'll have to go with Dean in the third round by TKO as I don't think Swaggart has the wind to go 15!!!

Help! I could have been an A-list blogger, but now I'm just a giggly frat boy with a thing for strawmen!

Oliver Willis calls the hyperbolic redneck Swaggart "the GOP Base", but *Mitch* is the one who's "smearing" and doesn't have his facts straight?

I guess that's a trip inside the "mind" of *every* Kerry supporter!

Just in case you're keeping score, Swaggart offered a half-assed non-apology for his remarks:
