Ugly Europeans

Europeans show their nuance and sophistication:

I've been watching to Tour this year too, Mitch. And to their credit the Tour officials have been appalled by this sort of thing.

This incident was apparently caused by drunken German fans who caused as much hindrance to their favorite Jans Ulrich in their enthusiasm as they did to Armstrong in opposition.

But I long ago dismissed the notion that Europeans have any superior claim on civility, so perhaps this is less of a "man bites dog" story to me than to others. Modern Europeans are howling barbarians compared to their forbears only a couple of generations ago (and those generations caused a couple of World Wars, so maybe barbarity is a safer condition for the rest of us, all things considered).

I'm glad to see the Europeans have put aside their quibbles with Americans. This picture is quite encouraging, as I see Armstong is being cheered forward to victory as #1 with the gesture of a raised digit. Over here though, we usually use the index finger for that. Must be some quaint cultural difference.

At first this pissed me off...classless and all that. But I asked myself, if I was drunk at a Vikings/Packers game (likely) and Brett Favre ran by I'm guessing much of the same would have came from me. No different for them I guess....and yes, you can call me classless :-)
