The Opposition

The left's most overrated Blogger, "Atrios", has this to say about Pat Tillman on the occasion of his funeral:

He's F**king Dead
...while introducing a hatchet piece from SFGate.

"Atrios" goes on to say:

It's a shame our media is always desperate to force all heroes conform to the standard cartoon script, instead of letting them just be human.
No specifics are given, of course - how ARE we supposed to treat heroes in "Atrios"' world?

Does that world recognize the concept of heroism?

Anyone?

Of course "He's F---ing Dead" is a quote from the actual article.

You did read the article didn't you?

Or, maybe, like your President, you are waiting for some toady to read it for you?

Atrios predicted in comments that morons like you would fall for the kicker on the post. You guys never fail to live down to expectations.

It's okay. We all post something stupid sometimes after failing to click through the link.

Either that, or you should take it up with Tillman's brother.

But, either way, I'm a bit puzzled why you thought it was a "hatchet piece..."

Posted by: Atrios at May 4, 2004 06:04 PM

To paraphrase someone on Fark, it appears Tillman's brother had as much balls as his brother did.

TK, and for that matter "Atrios" - Yes, it was in the article. But it was also your headline, which implies another level of added meaning, no?

Posted by: Mitch at May 4, 2004 08:47 PM

no added meaning, mitch. I had nothing but respect for Tillman from what I knew previously, which wasn't much, and then I had some more after reading the article.

I liked the unscripted unconcerned personal expression of his brother. I always like when people at memorial services feel free to say what they want to say, rather than what they're supposed to - especially when TV cameras are there.

Posted by: Atrios at May 4, 2004 08:58 PM

I don't follow the "implied meaning" argument. Tillman is indeed dead, so...??? I thought the article was quite complimentary, another fine tribute to a fallen soldier.

Mitch, give it up. From everything that Tillman did when he was alive - including telling his own family members to absolutely avoid interviews about his choice to serve - I think that the last thing he would have wanted was to become this administration's equivalent of the Old Shoe figure from "Wag the Dog".
He didn't want anyone in the media to (ab)use him for their purposes. Now, in his death, every single person who goes out of their way to glorify him in order to serve an agenda - without bothering to understand who Pat Tillman was - is spitting on his grave.
Screw you for participating in the desecration of everything that Tillman stood for.

I read the SFGate column. Change yourself. Did I miss something? Was there a point? Change yourself. I haven't read such a pointless waste in a long time. Change yourself. God forbid we unfairly denegrade the noble profession of millionaire athletes. Can I say "God" even if Atrios is reading? Change yourself. It would truly be a travesty if we, in contrast to Tillman, started thinking that most professional athletes were narcissistic greedy sluts with the moral grounding, social grace, and intelligence of a dingo. Yo Gwen! Change your column. It SUCKS!

"Screw you for participating in the desecration of everything that Tillman stood for."

So anyone who supports "this administration" can't claim to know what Tillman stood for, but you can, Mike?

I'm confused.

After reading many of the comments on Atrios’ page, I get it now. I just need to walk a mile in the opposition’s shoes, or at least a couple of feet. It all makes sense now. Sorry for my doubts Gwen.

Tillman is KIA, thus reminding us that that the grunts on the ground are not just a bunch of unfortunate objectors conscripted by their inability to get a job in Bush’s economy. The "opposition's" anger grows as the nation honors Tillman's sacrifice, thus reinforcing our will to persevere. The timing sucks because people were growing tired of the war with all the bad news. This dumb jock just set them back. Devistating. Anger must be vented and discredit must be propagated. Thus the Portland Indymedia thread, the UMass column, and finally the Ted Rall cartoon.

But alas, the SFGate column. Hey, his brother swears! He’s irreverent and religiously agnostic! And so was his late brother! Pat turns out to be complex, with a metrosexual streak and lacking any personal relationship with Jesus. He’s one of them! He’s a Bush-hater just like the rest of them! He’s not at all the hero the Bushies think he is. Now they can respect him and wipe him in the faces of the war-mongering theocons.

In all honesty, I’m glad he’s now gaining the respect of the “opposition”. Heros like Tillman deserve it. And maybe the “opposition” just might stop to think that they might have something in common with the next guy who gave his life to serve.

Mitch, this is honestly the silliest attack I've seen on another blogger in quite some time. Was this purposefully inane, some sort of satirical outreach?

Posted by: jesse at May 5, 2004 08:03 AM

So you'd think it'd be much easier for the left as a whole to denounce Rall, now that they know he has zero basis for attacking him as a dumb jock who wanted to kill Arabs. You'd think that, anyway.

Posted by: HH at May 5, 2004 08:35 AM

You got me, Jesse. It's all satire; goodness knows the left has never attacked the content or epistemology of any conservative pundit.

It's not an attack, by the way; it's a criticism. I know you lefties don't normally allow us conservatives that much nuance, but work with me, here.

Think it's silly? That's your prerogative.

I should add that, while this piece was written with a mild head of ire, this one was not.

Mike, more often than not the people we admire most are those who do great things without asking for anything in return. Tillman probably would not have wanted the coverage he received. But I'd hazzard a guess that the message being portrayed of his love for his country and doing what he felt was right to inspire others who feel likewise is something he would be proud of.
