They note something that I'd begun to wonder about in 1998 - the bromide that high turnout benefits the DFL. The huge turnout in '98 certainly didn't pull Skip Humphrey out of third place, and '02 was no different:
Strong turnout traditionally is thought to benefit Democrats. But Samantha Luks, a professor of political science at the University of Minnesota, said that may be because Democrats used to outstrip the GOP in voting drives. In recent elections, she added, Republicans may have put more emphasis on that tactic in their strongholds.And the independent vote, which went to Ventura in '98, went GOP last Tuesday:
