I struck up a fascinating conversation with the woman in the next seat, who had a child the same age as I did. Turns out she was my wife! Which reminded me: it had been a long time since we had a vacation together since Gnat was born.

When my kids were 18 months and 3 years old, my ex-wife and I took our first trip without kids since we'd been married, four years earlier. As we drove into Minneapolis on our way westward, we promised we wouldn't talk about the kids.

We didn't say a word until we got to Monticello.
