{"id":898,"date":"2007-06-06T05:15:29","date_gmt":"2007-06-06T11:15:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php\/index.php\/2007\/06\/06\/the-greatest-commemoration-part-iii-2\/"},"modified":"2007-06-06T10:17:24","modified_gmt":"2007-06-06T16:17:24","slug":"the-greatest-commemoration-part-iii-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=898","title":{"rendered":"The Greatest Commemoration, Part III"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the 63rd anniversary of D-Day.\u00a0 And as we get ready for Saturday&#8217;s dedication of the Minnesota World War II Memorial, it&#8217;s an especially-important anniversary.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"419\" src=\"http:\/\/www.americaslibrary.gov\/assets\/aa\/marshall\/aa_marshall_dday_3_e.jpg\" width=\"497\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota Historical Society has been collecting <a href=\"http:\/\/people.mnhs.org\/mgg\/categories.cfm?category=War&#038;parentnames=MGG&#038;CFID=5406&#038;CFTOKEN=67788867\">Minnesotans&#8217; stories from the war<\/a>.\u00a0 Their <a href=\"http:\/\/people.mnhs.org\/mgg\/categories.cfm?category=D%2DDay%20Invasion&#038;parentnames=mgg%3Awar%3AEuropean%20Theater%3ABattles&#038;CFID=5406&#038;CFTOKEN=67788867\">collected D-Day and Normandy Campaign stories<\/a> are very well worth a read.<\/p>\n<p>And for Minnesotans of Norwegian descent, it&#8217;s worth noting that 37 Norwegians died on D-Day &#8211; most of them aboard the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HNoMS_Svenner\">HNoMS Svenner<\/a><\/em>, a borrowed British destroyer that was sunk while providing fire support along a British invasion beach.\u00a0 While Norway contributed the term &#8220;Quisling&#8221; to the English vocabulary, the Norwegian resistance was larger (as a percentage of the population) than any other in Europe save <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/archives\/000785.html\">Denmark&#8217;s<\/a>; Norwegian commandos succeeded in shutting down the heavy water plant on which the German nuclear weapons program depended, and provided thousands of men for the Norwegian Navy and Air Forces in exile.<\/p>\n<p>But how does this connect with Minnesota?<\/p>\n<p>More on that tomorrow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the 63rd anniversary of D-Day.\u00a0 And as we get ready for Saturday&#8217;s dedication of the Minnesota World War II Memorial, it&#8217;s an especially-important anniversary.
