{"id":66504,"date":"2018-04-06T11:00:51","date_gmt":"2018-04-06T16:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=66504"},"modified":"2018-04-06T07:46:20","modified_gmt":"2018-04-06T12:46:20","slug":"throwback-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=66504","title":{"rendered":"Throwback Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tim Pawlenty is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/tim-pawlenty-makes-it-official-he-s-running-for-governor-again\/478905653\/\">officially in the Governor&#8217;s race,<\/a> surprising nearly nobody that&#8217;s been paying attention for the past few months.<\/p>\n<p>Ideological conservatives are unimpressed, of course.\u00a0 Being an ideological conservative myself, I completely get it.\u00a0 \u00a0Pawlenty wasn&#8217;t and isn&#8217;t a doctrinaire conservative.\u00a0 He&#8217;s the sort of pragmatic center-right small-c conservative that is a product of a career in the legislature, rather than as a doctrinemonger.<\/p>\n<p>But remember &#8211; just four years before he was elected governor, the Minnesota Republican party had gotten Arne Carlson elected.\u00a0 Carlson may have been to the left of the liberal, Rudy Perpich, that he beat in his first bid for office on many bedrock Republican issues.<\/p>\n<p>Is Pawlenty &#8220;conservative enough?&#8221;\u00a0 Of course not.<\/p>\n<p>Is Minnesota going to elect a doctrinaire conservative?\u00a0 Highly doubtful (although I do hope for a Wisconsin-like miracle one of these days).<\/p>\n<p>Indeed &#8211; is conservatism in and of itself a winning ideology, statewide, in Minnesota?\u00a0 I have\u00a0 my doubts.<\/p>\n<p>I follow the Buckley doctrine &#8211; elect the most conservative Republican\u00a0<em>who can win<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still open to being convinced.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tim Pawlenty is officially in the Governor&#8217;s race, surprising nearly nobody that&#8217;s been paying attention for the past few months.
