The State of Minnesota will be printing election ballots soon.\u00a0 The more candidates, the more voter confusion, the greater the risk the wrong person will be elected by mistake.\u00a0The State has a legitimate interest in keeping elections fair and transparent.\u00a0 One method would be to limit the number of candidates.\u00a0 We already do that tto some extent, by requiring a certain number of signatures to get on the ballot, but there still are too many candidates who qualify.\u00a0 It\u2019s reasonable to restrict the number of candidates for voter convenience.\u00a0 But not in a random or discriminatory manner; instead, the restriction should apply to candidates that have the fewest number of likely voters and therefore the least likelihood of being elected.\u00a0 Eliminating them from the ballot won’t affect the outcome of the election – they weren’t going to get elected anyway.
\nAs it happens, those sure-loser candidates mostly are Republicans, who haven’t won elective office in the Twin Cities for decades.\u00a0 Republican candidates serve mainly to confuse and mislead voters which threatens the integrity of the elections.\u00a0 Henceforth, Republican candidates are banned in Minnesota.
\nIt\u2019s a restriction that is reasonably related to a legitimate government interest and therefore passes the \u201crational basis\u201d standard of review for infringements on liberties protected by the Constitution.
