{"id":65725,"date":"2018-01-19T06:00:43","date_gmt":"2018-01-19T12:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=65725"},"modified":"2018-01-19T07:42:04","modified_gmt":"2018-01-19T13:42:04","slug":"you-just-knew-this-was-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=65725","title":{"rendered":"You Just Knew This Was Coming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I mainaged to get through the nineties without seeing more than an episode or two of\u00a0<em>Frazier, Roseanne,Seinfeld,\u00a0<\/em>and of course the big sitcom icon of the era,\u00a0<em>Friends.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But thanks to the miracle of Netflix, I managed to binge my way to currency in the NBC classic sometime over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>And when I watched it, I thought &#8220;what an almost quaint throwback; it almost felt like a seventies sitcom&#8221; &#8211; which, in many ways, it was; a transition between the\u00a0 manners of 70-s and &#8217;80s TV and what we have today.<\/p>\n<p>But as I watched &#8211; and mostly enjoyed &#8211; I couldn&#8217;t help think that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/455563\/friends-problematic-netflix-viewers\">stories like this were pretty much inevitable<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Having been given a new life on Netflix two decades after it debuted on NBC in 1994, Friends is being seen by a suspicious new generation with beady new eyes. Those eyes are more determined to find something to be offended by than anyone was in the 1990s, when the Paul Reveres fighting the political-correctness revolution were already warning you, \u201cThe idiocy is coming! The idiocy is coming!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMillennials watching Friends on Netflix shocked by storylines,\u201d ran the headline of a piece by Ilana Kaplan, writing from New York for the Independent. Examples of the kinds of things Millennials apparently find shocking: \u201cNew audiences claimed that Rachel would have been fired for sexual harassment because she hires an assistant who isn\u2019t qualified for the position because she wants to date him.\u201d Fat jokes \u2014 \u201cSome girl ate Monica!\u201d cried Joey (Matt LeBlanc) \u2014 are also now out of bounds, the Independent huffs. Using the royal \u201cwe\u201d for extra authority,<\/p>\n<p>Cosmopolitan writer Katie Stow says \u201cthe show is getting ripped to shreds for its \u2018problematic\u2019 content and \u2014 even as hardcore fans \u2014 we can\u2019t help but agree,\u201d scoring the sitcom for \u201cchucking offensive and inappropriate hand grenades all over every episode.\u201d This must be the first time in recorded history that anyone compared Friends\u2019 cutesy banter to hand grenades.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can not wait for the millennials to have teenagers and twentysomethings of their own.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I mainaged to get through the nineties without seeing more than an episode or two of\u00a0Frazier, Roseanne,Seinfeld,\u00a0and of course the big sitcom icon of the era,\u00a0Friends.\u00a0\u00a0 But thanks to the miracle of Netflix, I managed to binge my way to currency in the NBC classic sometime over the past year.
