LIBRELLE: \u00a0Donald Trump is sucking up to fascists.<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0(Finding a CD of “The River”<\/em>) \u00a0What, again? \u00a0Do tell.<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0 He’s invited loose cannon fascist Filipino\u00a0dictator Rodrigo Duterte to the White House<\/a> for a meeting<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0(Visibly disinterested<\/em>) \u00a0 So? \u00a0And he was elected democratically. \u00a0He’s not a dictator until he suspends Filipino democracy.<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0 He’s cozying up to fascists.<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0Would you prefer that the Philippines – tens of millions of heavily westernized people, a growing economy, a key military position on the PacRim, and a long time ally of the United States – fall into the Chinese orbit?<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0But Duiterte is an awful man!<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0He’s a democratically elected leader. \u00a0And sometimes you make common cause with awful people to solve more important goals. \u00a0Like containing China.<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0We can’t condone extremists like Duterte!<\/p>\n

BERG: \u00a0His “extremism” is a matter for the people of his country to ascertain. \u00a0And containing Chinese expansionism is for us to do.<\/p>\n

LIBRELLE: \u00a0You know who Duterte sounds like?<\/p>\n
