{"id":1011,"date":"2007-07-06T04:54:49","date_gmt":"2007-07-06T10:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/index.php\/index.php\/2007\/07\/06\/songs-i-shouldnt-hate-but-do\/"},"modified":"2007-07-03T16:17:02","modified_gmt":"2007-07-03T22:17:02","slug":"songs-i-shouldnt-hate-but-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shotinthedark.info\/wp\/?p=1011","title":{"rendered":"Songs I Shouldn&#8217;t Hate But Do"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think it was Leonard Bernstein &#8211; or Keith Richard, I always mix the two up &#8211; who said that 95% of any genre of music, classical or blues or jazz or rock or pop or afro-worldbeat &#8211; is rubbish.\u00a0 5% of pretty much any genre is going to be great, no matter <em>what <\/em>genre.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8211; apropos not much &#8211; there&#8217;s a long list of songs that I&#8217;m told I <em>should <\/em>like, but for whatever reason <em>just&#8230;can&#8217;t.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to kick the list off right about now:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>What&#8217;s Going On, <\/em>Four Non-Blondes<\/strong>: Cringeworthy retro-hippie bilge.\u00a0 Sung by chicks!<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>No Rain, <\/em>Blind Melon<\/strong>: Cringeworthy retro-hippie bilge.\u00a0 <strike>Sung by chicks<\/strike>!<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Lay Down Sally, <\/em>Eric Clapton<\/strong>: Clapton is one of the great guitar players alive.\u00a0 He pretty much invented the &#8220;white guys doing bluesy-rock&#8221; genre.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marcy_Levy\">Marcy Levy<\/a> is one of the coolest background singers ever born.\u00a0 Combining the three should be a no-brainer.\u00a0 And yet I can&#8217;t stand it, partly because it&#8217;s just a pointless song, and partly because it kicked off about 10 years of really bad music from Clapton.\u00a0 And why would anyone listen to LDS when &#8220;The Core&#8221; &#8211; which features Clapton actually playing some amazing guitar, Levy actually singing a cool harmony part, and a song that actually works &#8211; is available on the same album?<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>LA Woman, <\/em>The Doors<\/strong>: Actually, except for &#8220;Hello, I Love You&#8221;, pretty much everything the Doors ever did stank.\u00a0 One of very few topics where the Oliver Stone movie about the subject was better than the subject.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>No Rain, <\/em>Blind Melon<\/strong>: Yep.\u00a0 Still cringeworthy retro-hippie bilge.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Sunspot Baby, <\/em>Bob Seger<\/strong>: Don&#8217;t get me wrong &#8211; Seger has had his moments.\u00a0 Many of &#8217;em.<em> <\/em>I flip on &#8220;Ramblin&#8217; Gamblin&#8217; Man&#8221; when I need wash Jefferson Airplane out of my head.\u00a0 &#8220;Hollywood Nights&#8221;, &#8220;Beautiful Loser&#8221; and &#8220;Night Moves&#8221; have prominent places in the soundtrack of my teenage years.\u00a0 And &#8220;Main Street&#8221; is one of the best songs ever written.\u00a0 Chalk it up to having to play SSB for too many drunken mooks in too many crappy bars, and getting very tired of that same 12-bar progression, over, and over, and over, and over&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>You Spin Me Round, <\/em>Dead Or Alive<\/strong>: Adam Sandler&#8217;s cover was actually a huge improvement.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>What&#8217;s Going On, <\/em>Four Non-Blondes<\/strong>: Still cringeworthy retro-hippie bilge.\u00a0 Not all that sure about the &#8220;chick&#8221; thing.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Everything &#8220;ZuZu&#8217;s Petals&#8221; Ever Did<\/strong>: No, I don&#8217;t care that the lead singer is married to Paul Westerberg.\u00a0 Twin Cities underground rock died the day ZuZu&#8217;s Petals became a headliner..\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Eternal Flame, <\/em>The Bangles<\/strong>: The sound of promise being shattered; the band that in 1984 gave us the incandescent &#8220;Dover Beach&#8221;, four years later gave us\u00a0a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Desmond_Child\">Desmond Child<\/a> outtake. Sung by chicks!<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Everything You Want, <\/em>Vertical Horizon<\/strong>: The day alt-rock died.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>You Shook Me All Night Long, <\/em>AC\/DC<\/strong>: No, I love &#8220;Highway to Hell&#8221;, &#8220;It&#8217;s a Long Way to The Top&#8221;, &#8220;For Those About To Rock&#8221;, &#8220;Love At First Feel&#8221; and a zillion other AC\/DC songs.\u00a0 But YSMANL wore out its welcome by about\u00a01983, never to return.\u00a0 Instant tune-out.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>What&#8217;s Going On, <\/em>Four Non-Blondes<\/strong>: Yep.\u00a0 Still cringeworthy.\u00a0 And I think the bass player was really a guy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;ll do for now.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think it was Leonard Bernstein &#8211; or Keith Richard, I always mix the two up &#8211; who said that 95% of any genre of music, classical or blues or jazz or rock or pop or afro-worldbeat &#8211; is rubbish.\u00a0 5% of pretty much any genre is going to be great, no matter what genre.
