Breaking News (Breaking Wind) From Seven Years Ago

Deep thoughts from Chris Cillizza, circa 2015:

Joe Biden’s unique trait as a politician is — and always has been — his honesty. Sometimes that honesty gets him into varying degrees of trouble. Sometimes it makes it seem as though he’s the closest thing to a real person you could possibly hope for in politics.

This didn’t age too well, now did it? I can’t prove Cillizza’s childhood nickname wasn’t Corn Pop, or that he wasn’t at some point a classmate of Biden’s at the Naval Academy, but it’s a useful reminder that our betters have been carrying water for Ol’ Joe for a very long time now. There was more:

The Joe Biden on display with Colbert is the person who has inspired remarkable loyalty — over decades — from a tightknit group of staffers who would form the core of his presidential brain trust if he decided to run in 2016. It’s the guy who, for a time in 1987, was one of the front-runners for the Democratic presidential nomination. It’s who Barack Obama saw when he decided to pick Biden as his vice president in 2008.

1987. Do you remember why Biden fell from grace all those years ago? I suppose you could ask Neil Kinnock, whose speech Biden plagiarized. You could ask Barack Obama:

One Democrat who spoke to Obama recalled the former president warning, “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to fuck things up.”

After the last 18 months, no one seriously doubts The Leader of the Free World’s ability in that realm.

  1. a tightknit group of staffers who would form the core of his presidential brain trust

Biden’s staffers can be called many things, but brain trust, seriously?

  2. Joe Biden’s unique trait as a politician is — and always has been — his honesty.
We are talking about a guy whose law school and political careers (the only work that he has ever done) were derailed by plagiarism. Biden regularly lied about his academic credentials. He quit his 1988 bid for Dem presidential candidate when a tape surfaced showing Biden bragging that he had graduated in the top half of his law school class (in fact he graduated 76th out of 85). He claimed to have three degrees from the University of Delaware when he had a single BA. Biden also claims that he attended law school on a full academic scholarship, when he had received a half scholarship based on financial need.
Biden regularly claims that the tragic automobile accident that took the life of his first wife and his daughter was caused by a truck driver who “drank his lunch.” In reality, the truck driver was sober and police determined that Biden’s wife was at fault for the accident.
All of this is well known. So why did Cillizza write that Biden was a uniquely honest politician? Stupidity? Hackery?
Cillizza is now working for — you guessed it — CNN.

  3. MP.
I believe that the University of Delaware called bull shit on his ever attending there.

He recently claimed that he went or was nominated to attend the Naval Academy.

Like the majority of politicians, his ability to lie with a straight face serves him well, knowing that he’ll get away with it.

  4. So why did Cillizza write that Biden was a uniquely honest politician? Stupidity? Hackery?

    Embrace the power of “and.”

  5. So why did Cillizza write that Biden was a uniquely honest politician? Stupidity? Hackery?

It is newspeak, pure and simple, whereby words have opposite meanings: love is hate, peace is war and deceitful is honest.

  6. I have an advanced degree in English Literature from Balliol College at Oxford University, a “first” with academic honors.

Okay, no, the college won’t admit it. But I believe it in my heart; therefore, it’s true and my statement is completely honest.

Okay, no, I don’t believe it in my heart, but I wish I did; therefore, it’s true and my statement is completely honest.

Okay, no, I don’t wish I believed it, I wish YOU believed it; therefore, it’s true and my statement is completely honest.

You callin’ me a liar, fat? How many push-ups can YOU do, huh? You wanna go, right here, right now? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

  8. Re: lying:
Boris Johnson was mired in personal scandals, and he lied a lot, and got caught a lot, and then in getting caught kept lying, and I guess in some countries people get tired of that sort of thing. Turns out parliamentary democracy also runs on norms and also depends on people upholding them.

  9. Lying, scandals, none of it means anything so long as you control the people who count the ballots. Lesko Brandon is perfectly safe.

  10. It was clear what kid of creature Johnson was from the very beginning — a liar, a man impressed with those who had the trappings of power and a man with no moral code whatsoever. The question which cannot be asked too often is how did those who knew exactly what he was like let him become PM.

  11. Oddly enough, I don’t remember any R wing pundits claiming that Trump was a brilliant businessman. I’m sure that they are out there, but they are such fringe figures that even I never read them. Even Trump supporting pundits tended to gloss over his business failures and instead praise him as a businessman who made money by managing the Trump brand and leveraging bankruptcy laws..
Trump went bankrupt running a casino, which is a business where people literally give you a dollar expecting you to give them back 95 cents.
So what was Cillizza thinking when he wrote this crap article about Biden’s honesty? He wrote it in 2015, when Biden was widely known as a serial prevaricator. How can a person lie to himself like this and still consider himself a journalist?

  12. Boris Johnson was mired in personal scandals, and he lied a lot, and got caught a lot, and then in getting caught kept lying, and I guess in some countries people get tired of that sort of thing.

Soooooooooo, when can we expect Joe Biden’s party to call for his resignation?

  13. MP;
Trump was the darling of many of the people that would later vilify him, including Oprah, Obama, Al Sharptoon and even Hillary. Several rappers even mentioned him in their songs about being rich and successful. Once again, some of those same people took his campaign contributions and never returned it after they turned on him. You know. Like typical lying, back stabbing DemoCommies always do.

  14. Guys, you’re forgetting something: It’s Cillizza, CNN, and the other Vintage Press who are praising Biden’s honesty.

And, you know something? They’re right. Biden is far more truthful than they are.

  16. Here’s an interesting take on Boris Johnson’s tenure:

“His personal foibles were known to all before he came to office and have always been part and parcel of his offering. They will not affect the reality that he has got the big calls right and has always confounded his critics in doing so.”

    – Alan Mendoza, co-founder and executive director of the Henry Jackson Society, on soon-to-be-former UK prime minister Boris Johnson
