Mayor Carter/Frey’s Perilous Tightrope

On the one hand, official hypochondria along with privileged lawlessness is polling very badly for the DFL this fall. So the vaccine mandates (and the whole “public safety is a privilege” thing) have got to go.

On the other hand, if DFLers abandon hypochondria, the Karen vote (social, not ethnic) will rebel.

So the mayors chose the middle path: end the useless mandate, keep the useless masks.

  1. Yesterday, I was makings calls around the Hiawatha Ave to Portland area. I saw several small businesses with both professionally and hand lettered signs proclaiming “Frey Has Got to Go!”

  2. The mayors imposed a vaccine mandate.
    Covid case numbers are falling.
    SUCCESS!

Plainly, Covid was defeated by the vaccine mandates. Thank God we have such brave public servants willing to risk all to protect the public from this scourge, despite endless attempts on their lives by far right anti-science anti-vaxx racist sexist homophobic white supremacists.

  3. That’s too much to type every time. Can we just grab all the insults and combine them into one anagram?

Racist Sexist Homophobic White Supremacist could be RASHOWS, as in

“Those RASHOWS at SITD are afraid to debate me.”

  4. What about (far-)right wing, JD? I personally wouldn’t feel sufficiently appreciated were I considered merely a RASHOW. I want to be a FaRRASHOW.

PS… can an anagram itself become too long to be useful?

  5. So Amir Locke was shot because cops were looking for his 18 year old cousin, Makhi Speed. Speed has a record as long as my arm, despite being just 18 years old. He was arrested at age 16 after shooting a guy in the leg during a fight. There followed lots of theft and bragging about his guns and violent plans on social media.
Speed was under probation all the time.
This is an example of what I have commented about before — black juvenile offenders being allowed to skate, again and again, so limosuine liberal HennCo attorney Mike Freeman can talk about how is putting cops in jail and black offenders back on the street. Speed was given chance after chance to get out of jail, his behavior did not change, and now his cousin is dead and Speed, who has since been apprehended, is looking at a very long sentence as an adult.
No one wins in this situation except for Mike Freeman and the Defund the Police crowd. From their POV, this was a perfect outcome. Couldn’t have gone better. This what the system looks like when it works.
Freeman was elected with 54% of the vote in 2018.

  6. Emery accusing other people of crankish behavior gave me my belly laugh for today.

  7. Oh, Emery is doing that weird thing that Dog Gone used to do, linking to some random internet writer as an authority because they agree with Emery.
“Look! here’s a housewife with a blog! If you don’t listen to me about vaxxes, listen to her!”

  8. Polk County, Wisconsin, vax rate 50%, has seen its active covid cases drop from 270 to 72 since January 31! Polk County’s sharp drop in covid cases does not correlate in its vax rate in any way.

  9. Minneapolis has become a city that cares more about criminals feelings than the safety of law abiding citizens. As woolly suggests—violent criminals need to be met with unwavering force.
Minneapolis would rather hug them….and understand them.

  10. The utter joy of ultra-violence.

The guilt-ridden incompetence of the legal system.

A society trapped in its own incoherence.

A Clockwork Orange has become a reality.

Damn good foresight for a 1962 novel written in three short weeks by Anthony Burgess.

  11. Recalling Clockwork Orange, I think of the interactions between Alex and his jaded social worker; both of them playing the game knowing it’s not going to change anything. And then, after SCIENCE (recalling a recent thread here on SiTD) “reforms” him, Alex ultimately uses the system’s own devices to make it work for him again.

  12. Burgess was master of more than English, MP. He was a true polyglot; I think he spoke six or seven languages.

His invented language, Nadsat was largely based on Russian.

Fun fact; the first bit of classical music I heard as a young veck was the score of Clockwork. It germinated a lifelong love of beautiful, Western classical music. Oddly enough, most especially Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

  13. MP, movie was better because of the ending alone since Kubrick changed it. Book had a disney ending and that was such a let-down. Maybe the movie would have been even better if Kubrik used actors of the same age as in the book, but then he would have had to change his name to Polanski.
