Hypothetically Speaking

Joe Doakes from Como Park emails about a story I’ve been wanting to touch on all week:

You know those “Good Guy with a gun” stories that Liberals scoff at as Sexist White Supremacists Compensating for Something?

This Edina woman isn’t scoffing.

If only there were some way society could assume responsibility for protecting the public from violent criminals, some group of armed public servants sworn to uphold the law so that private citizens don’t have to.

Joe Doakes

Of course, the “good guy with a gun“ angle got buried so deeply, it’s a good thing the fact didn’t need oxygen.

You’ll never get our opinion class to admit it, but it was the good guy with the gun that saved the situation.

  1. Well now. This was a pretty bold action by those car jackers, because that Lund’s store is at 50th and France. The whole area around the store is always busy, too. I’m surprised that there isn’t at least one cop car in that area at all times.

  2. Three men intervened and saved her? No women? How can that be?
No description of the assailants, so a reward is being offered for the apprehension of People Who Are Impossible To Describe, not even by their sex.
The Saint Louis Park police web page on the incident does not describe the bad guys as Somali males, but it does say that one of the victims identified the bad guys as Somali males.

  3. Scary stuff. Underscores the importance of locking car doors immediately upon entering one’s car, even if you are CCW. Buys you time and time buys you options. Can’t believe the number of people who get into car and immediately look at phones. There are predators out there people!

  4. Hey, wait, at Lunds? Before I clicked on the link, I thought this was the Edina woman in Indian Hills who was attacked like the Linden Hills woman, but the the former had a gun and the thieves ran off. This is yet another one?

… oh, yeah, wasn’t Edina’s hizzoner complaining the other day about how crime has come to Edina and, darn it, something has to happen. He’s mad now.

  5. There are about 50,000 Somalis in MN. Minnesota has a population of about 5 million.
So merely by specifying that the attackers were, in fact, identified as Somali, the coppers and the media could eliminate 99% of Minnesotans as suspects.
I wonder why they don’t do that?

  6. golfdoc50;
You beat me to it on the number of people, the majority of them women, that immediately look at their phones when they get in their vehicles. Women that run, alone, with ear buds, listening to music or whatever. My neighbor had been chastising his wife for that for over a month. She’s a petite woman and although he said she’s pretty strong from her daily kickboxing workouts, someone bigger catching her by surprise, wouldn’t be good. He ended up teaching her a lesson one day. He gave her a 10 minute head start, then caught up to her, grabbing her from behind and lifting her off the ground. She was royally pissed off at him, but no longer wears ear buds and also varies her route.

  7. In a modern society with a functioning law enforcement agency, I wouldn’t have to be aware of my surroundings, lock the doors immediately, paint the Blood of the Lamb on my lintel (but putting up a BLM sign, which is the modern equivalent). In a modern society that expects civilized behavior from everyone, I’d be able to go to the grocery store without having to worry about ‘safari rules.’

I don’t blame the women. As recently as one year ago, Edina was a clean, modern, civilized society. That’s why those women acted as they did – it was perfectly safe and normal. They didn’t realize their society had collapsed. They didn’t realize they were living in Mogadishu West.

But that was Pre-Brandon. That’s all gone now. Edina schools are already pretty much destroyed by CRT. Electric power will be the next to go, to save the planet from global climate change, followed by safe drinking water and sanitary sewer because all the old white men who knew how to operate the mechanical systems will flee and the diversity hires will be descendants of Nubian princes who are too good to get their hands dirty.

  8. What we will see is some shops hiring private security & raising prices to cover the cost. In less expensive shops people will have to provide their own security.
Given the way things are going, employers will not be allowed to ask candidates for security guard positions if they have a criminal record, so God only knows what this will look like.

  9. From CrimeWatchMpls:
So, for nearly TWO YEARS, this #$%^@! @HennepinAtty has been willing to let #Mpls victims & residents languish with unprecedented lawlessness and carjackings.

But god forbid Edina and St. Louis Park start having carjackings, now he’s going to get effing serious.

    Get real Mike.

  10. Dittos on how we ought to identify the physical characteristics of the assailants, and dittos on the ear buds. I remember way back in the 1980s, we joked that the best way to become a hood ornament was to run with a Walkman. Now, even in supposed good areas, it’s become an issue of crime as well. I’ve also joked for years that I run and bike in a blaze orange vest first because it’s visible, and second because it suggests to potential assailants that I might be armed.

We might suggest that a key part of staying safe is the kind of situational awareness training that you get a smattering of in carry permit training, as well as reminders that it’s just not healthy to be on your cell phone all the time. Interact with the world that’s actually around you.

  11. One other thought about safety; any jacket that has pockets and/or goes a little bit beyond the hip is going to suggest to potential assailants that the person could have a weapon in there, and enables the wearer to actually have a gun, pepper spray, or other means of personal protection there. Green olive drab or camo color can be a plus as well.

We might as well be smart abou these things.

  12. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve tried to explain this concept to my family, none of whom carry a firearm.
“I don’t carry because I expect to need to use my gun. If I ever expect that I’ll need to use my gun, I don’t go there.”

Also, despite the fact that my parents and sister all live in a nice part of St. Paul, I insisted, repeatedly, that they at least have a go bag of their daily prescription medication during the riots last year. Either they actually acquiesced, or they just said they’d do it. Luckily, we didn’t need to find out because they never evacuated to my barely suburban home.

  13. You will NOT hear admission that reducing policing is what is causing the current crime wave from any of the people driving the “defund the police” movement (aka #BLM). These people are hard core ideologues, and their ideology teaches that policing causes crime. More police, more crime, fewer police, less crime.
What they will blame for the increase in crime (if they admit it all) is capitalism and “white privilege.”
You get what you vote for.

  14. That fellow really is a good Samaritan. Given the dominant, toxic political environment up there, that guy risked being arrested and forced to fork out tens of thousands of dollars proving he’s not a White supremacist who just wanted to shoot harmless black folks.

Honestly, if I lived in that kind of place, I don’t think I’d ever draw my pistol in defense of anyone but me and mine….just not worth it.

  15. MP, police DO cause crime, and I can prove it mathematically.

No police, nobody arrested. Number of crimes reported by police = zero.

Many police, many people arrested. Number of crimes reported by police = many.

    The solution is obvious.

  16. The correct terminology used these days is “over policed.” What you do is look at an area with a lot of poor people. You find the usual social pathologies of poor people and explicitly connect these pathologies to the heightened police presence that results from them.
So, “premature births” among “Bipoc communities” is the result of “over policing.”
I’ve looked at a lot of “anti-racist” web sites, some of them written by academics.
There is no such thing as “under policing.” There is only “over policing,” and it is blamed for everything, including crime.
Such is the religion of our social elites, the wealthy and best educated Americans.
