“Mussolini-Like Power” And “Single-Man Autocratic Rule” Must Not Be Polling Well

Governor Walz’s emergency powers ended last night.

Turns out that to the DFL it was all a bone to be thrown over budget money.

“Our agreement with our federal partners to extend [food assistancce] benefits for Minnesotans, coupled with the thoughtful plan outlined in the House Democrats’ amendment to wind down the emergency response in state government, means that we can close this chapter of our history and celebrate the brighter days ahead,” Walz said in a statement late Tuesday.

Anyone but me having a hard time buying the notion that the Governor moved his plan up a month, on a day’s notice, over some bureaucratic tittle-jotting at the USDA?

My guess – and it is a guess – is that the DFL is starting to see that Covid is eating political capital they can’t waste as they try to get ahead of the urban crime problem they’ve created.

  1. Paul Gazelka was on with Justice & Drew this morning and said that the budget bill passed unanimously. This illustrates Mitch’s point. I think that this move was the Democrat’s way of backing out, so they can blame the GOP later.

  2. But, but… the Delta mutation! And the new Delta-plus? Had Dr Michael Osterholm approved this? Do we have enough beds? Ventilators? What about the curve? Can someone think of the children?

  3. Boss, did Gazelka mention making the Dems approve a more strict version of the Emergency Powers law? Or were they just relieved and happy to be given a crumb from the Dems

  4. Dateline: August 10, 2021, Saint Paul, Minnesota

My fellow Minnesotans. I come before you with saddened heart. Since Republicans in the legislature forced me to end the Peacetime Emergency, three new cases of Covid Variant D have surfaced. Experts in infectious disease at the Health Department, working closely with professors at the University of Minnesota, have developed a computer model which predicts – with 95% confidence – that a huge surge of Covid Variant D cases is coming in the next few weeks or months. The numbers of people infected with Covid will overwhelm hospitals. If I do nothing, upwards of 70,000 Minnesotans will die, so many that the funeral homes won’t be able to handle all the corpses. But if I act now, using the same common-sense measures we used to defeat the first stains of Covid, it might enable us to some of those precious, precious lives. Therefore, effective immediately, Labor Day is cancelled, school is cancelled, the free exercise of religion is banned, free speech is abolished, persons who assemble to petition the government for redress of grievences will be shot on sight, the entire state is placed under house arrest, and all businesses are closed except government bureaucrats, Menards and one candy store on Highway 169. I know you’re all willing to do whatever it takes to have a better, safer, healthier Minnesota. Thank you for your support.

  5. What have Republicans accomplished? Ending Walz emergency powers 1 month before he was ending them?

I think it was pretty shrewd of Walz to “give away” something he going to anyway and get the obstructionist Republicans to do what was needed.

  6. Read the fine print, especially bullet #3:

Allows Health and Human Services commissioners to declare a public health disaster related to COVID-19, to preserve emergency food benefits

Continues executive orders related to state COVID-19 staffing and unemployment insurance regulations until Aug. 1

Preserves the governor’s authority to coordinate, allocate, distribute, and manage COVID-19 vaccination and testing without a peacetime emergency—and also his authority to declare a new peacetime emergency as necessary

Walz should be impeached over his utter failure to manage the covid-19 “crisis.”
Let me remind you that Wisconsin had only a short lockdown, and that the governor’s ability to extend the 30 days emergency (as Walz has done) was declared null and void by the WI supreme court early on. The result? No significant difference in WI and MN covid fatality rates. Except a much higher rate of nursing home deaths in MN.
What a joke. Another #elitefailure candidate.

  7. No significant difference in WI and MN covid fatality rates

Given that WI has a denser, older, fatter population – which one might expect would fare worse than MInnesota – they did better in comparison.

  8. MBerg, here in the badger state, we believe that Minnesota has the denser, older, fatter population.

  9. “Emery on June 30, 2021 at 12:22 pm said:
    He’ll get re-elected in a landslide.”

Being an itelligent person, I make no predictions, but I will remind the SITD readers that on the eve of the 2016 presidential election, Emery predicted that Hillary would win over Trump in a landslide. Earlier in 2016, Emery had confidently predicted that the Brexit referendum would fail.

  10. jdm,
There was pretty strong evidence that there would be more comprehensive language and harder to hit guidelines for extending power going forward. There are a number of options being discussed between the more sane of the Dems and the GOP. I think the Dems are nervous because Biden and his corrupt cabal, which is essentially Barack Obama’s corrupt cabal, are polling lower than whale shit and they believe they could lose their majority.

  11. Oh, I am nothing like you, Emery.
You would love to find a quote from me saying that Trump would win in 2020 (you won’t).
People should be made aware of your claims that the Brexit vote would fail, that Hillary would win the 2016 election, and also that you still believe in the “Russian collusion” hoax, and that you think that Trump will be “reinstated” as president in August 2021.
You are a nut case, Emery. You need to see a mental health pro, or get your meds upped or something.

  12. Just think of the fun a GOP governor could have by declaring crime or abortion a “public health crisis.”

  13. If Ivanka can work in the West Wing and Jared can be a globe trotting diplomat, you can be a pretend Dr in multiple disciplines.

  14. I accept full responsibility. Let me now explain the important distinction between accepting responsibility and taking the blame.

  15. Note that I have never claimed to be a doctor.
Also I should mention the many times Emery has been caught plagiarizing, cut-n-pasting things he found on the internet as his own comment.
Also his making up quotes and attributing them to me.

You don’t need to be any kind of expert to detect a 3rd rate intellect.

  16. Trump lost the state by 7%………….Walz will win by nearly 9% “Rocks and Cows” don’t vote.

In about 18 months we’ll have an answer to your projections. Do you think that Mike Lindell or Scott Jensen is the person to bring forth all of Walz’s failings? I am betting that Republicans will still be stuck on supporting Trump and any economic consequences.

  17. Let me now explain…

Are you working on that explanation? Cuz you didn’t really explain anything.

  18. You guys actually believe those Republicans? Daudt commented that it’s clear that emergency powers are in desperate need of reform to strike a proper balance between the executive and legislative branch. So nothing was done. The Senate Republicans had nothing up their sleeves.

And then that Powerline article has an update. Nothing’s changed. The Republicans got effed. Again.

  19. Looks like the Ds and Rs in the MN legislature voted to end Walz’s emergency powers. He did not give them up, they were taken from him.

  20. The only one making any projections is Emery.
So remember, he was wrong about Hillary winning over Trump in a landslide, Wrong about the Brexit vote, and of course wrong about “Russian collusion.”
Emery has also predicted that Trump will be “reinstated” as president this August.

  21. He did not give them up, they were taken from him

Piffle. He agreed to the change behind the scenes and the “ramp-down” will take until Aug 1 anyway. Nothing’s changed. Just in time to reinstate it all again because of the Delta-variant and it’s little brother, Delta-plus. It’s all the rage in Europe.

  22. “Ending emergency powers is a legislative prerogative,” said Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, R- East Gull Lake. “The governor has held onto these powers far too long and used them far too broadly.” ~ Strib

If Gazelka’s team had come to the table with any plan other than “do nothing”, then he could have been seen as a serious partner. But when his entire position was based on the former President’s desire to pretend nothing was happening.
    .

  23. R: You must end the Peacetime Emergency or we won’t pass your budget.
    W: Okay, I’ll end it.
    R: Okay, we’ll pass it.
W: Okay, now I’m declaring a new Peacetime Emergency.
    [crickets]
    [Democrats giggling]
R:Wait, what? Can he do that?

  24. And – gag – Emery is absolutely correct. Between the evil, cynical MFers in the populous portions of the state and the good little scandis who just love them some Big Government, Walz and any other democrat running for an executive type office can expect to be easily re-elected. And they can (and do) take that to the bank.

  25. jdm, even trollbots are right twice a day, like a stopped clock, because believe me, there is nothing ticking up there. Look who’s left in MN other then a few of you saps – just leftist turds. Of course they will re-elect Omar, Walz, Ellison, etc in a landlside. This is yet another example that shows that R is dead in MN. Deceased. Kaput. No more. An ex-party. Just watch the MP skit, you get my gist. I hope I am wrong, but that parrot is only upright because it is nailed to the perch!

  26. jpa, you’ll note that I wrote executive type office like governor, AG, secretary of this and that. Republicans will continue to have a presence in the legislature because outstate MN is very conservative. Will they have enough presence and more importantly, will they exercise that presence if ever enough? Probably not to either.

  27. 👆The world has moved on, and the people who can’t see it yet are the ones who are delusional.

Serious question: name 3-4 individuals who would be an acceptable candidate for the GOP nomination for Governor?

  28. Quite a rousing defense of Walz’s maladministration, Emery.
You seem to be saying that Walz deserves re-election, if you ignore what he actually did when he was in office.

  29. Serious question: name 3-4 individuals who would be an acceptable candidate for the GOP nomination for Governor?

    Go to a library.

Ask for one of those things we used to call phone books.

    Start with the A’s.

  30. If there are enough idiots, oh hi Emery, then Walz can win.
    Seriously, Greg ++.

  31. All they need to do to completely dominate American politics and dictate policy is get close to 50% of the vote.
What they will do, actually what they have already done, is normalize the idea that you will not know the winner of an election on election day or the day after. Their allies in the press have helped them with this.
Then, after the polls close, you have enough early cast and mail in votes to play with. You count until your guy is ahead, then stop counting.
As Emery has reminded us, it is not the voters who choose the winner, it is the people who count the votes.
And in America’s winner-take-all political system, all you need is 50% +1 to control 100% of law making and policy setting.

  32. Sorry to break this to you Emery, but I am hearing more Dems complaining about government overreach, reckless spending, invasion of privacy, reverse discrimination, blatant hypocrisy, the release of criminals and cancel culture. In fact, two of my colleagues who have more virulent TDS than you (if that’s even possible), have finally admitted that he actually was doing good stuff for the country.

  33. Emery said: “The world has moved on, and the people who can’t see it yet are the ones who are delusional.”

    Self referential humor.
