Fragile

Joe Doakes from Como Park em;ails:

Has anybody else been getting messages saying that in these troubled times, the sender wants us to know how much they care about us?   My credit card company, my bank, even my grocery store care about me now, in these troubled times, which evidently is something new for them – caring about their customers – since they never mentioned it to me, before.

My CEO sent an email to top management.  He pointed out that Thursday was an emotional, soul-searching moment; that the last few weeks had been draining and exhausting for all of us; and how important it is we make space for ourselves to get through troubled times like these, particularly BIPOC employees and leaders.  We must take time to pause and recognize what happens when our systems and structures fail in plain sight.  He asked that staff set aside 12:00 to 2:30 to make space for quiet and to observe Duante Wright’s live-streamed funeral, not to schedule work-as-usual or meetings during that time.

I don’t recall seeing similar messages in the past, when our organization’s mission was to “Delight the Customer.”  I started seeing them when the focus changed to “Racial Justice and Diversity in the Workforce” accompanied by a purge of old White men and promotion of women to management.  Apparently, management now believes it’s essential that we fill the organization with Black, Indigenous and Persons of Color who are unable to do their jobs because they can’t handle the ordinary stresses of life.

I liked it better the old way.

I figure people who called 2020 “the worst year ever” never heard of 1942, 1916, 1861, or the Black Death, and have little comprehension of actual difficulty in life.

  1. I’ve been experiencing a particularly vexing behavior from vendors(clinics, banks, etc) of late: they ask me for my Preferred Personal Pronouns. Realizing that it is not a discussion I wish to engage at every interaction I’ve chosen instead to answer “Whatever I wish them to be at the moment”.

Apparently this flummoxes their CRM software. If they persist with their request I complain that their insistence marginalizes and oppresses me. Stating that I refuse to let them further victimize me I ask to speak to the senior Karen on duty. Twisting their tails like this is great fun – but you must keep a straight face while you do it.

  2. Got one from the superintendent of schools in District 191, who is already off my list of birthday party invitations because of her role in nuking the education of the students.

2021 is still young and by all indications is already becoming a “Get Whitey” year. How long before the blood starts flowing while cops and DOJ stand idly by, egging on the violence?

  4. We were getting “invites” from some diversity consultant our asshole CEO has hired to join the “Diversity Committee”. Of course I deleted them without inspection, but they were persistent for awhile…then they stopped.

Next came an invite from the newly formed “Diversity Committee” of, evidently 3 people (in a company of 3,000), to join them in a Zoom meeting with some black guy they had hired to lecture us on White privileging, or some shit. Again; summary deletion. Again the persistence…then the announcement that the meeting had been cancelled, along with the DC’s disappointment at our lack of enthusiasm.

I’m expecting an email from the asshole CEO informing his exempt “team” participation in the Diversity Committee is mandatory. IDGAS, I’m 2 years out from a life of leisure.

Mac, I use adverbs. My adverbs are:
    Boldly
    Shamelessly
    Defiantly

  5. How long before the blood starts flowing while cops and DOJ stand idly by, egging on the violence?

The cops might stand idly by, but DOJ operatives will be directing the assault.

  6. People living in 2021 are experiencing what would have happened if Germany had won WWII, with insanity replacing efficiency.
